GLENROY BARNES RAPE AND ASSAULT IN RUGBY SENTENCED AT WARWICK CROWN COURT

In a case that has shocked the local community, Glenroy Barnes, a 27-year-old man with no fixed address but known to have resided in Rugby, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term following his conviction for a brutal sexual assault and rape. The incident took place in Warwickshire, where the victim, a 76-year-old woman, was walking her dog when she encountered Barnes.

According to court reports, Barnes approached the elderly woman in a village within Warwickshire, attempting to initiate a conversation. What initially appeared to be a casual encounter quickly turned sinister when Barnes pulled the woman into a nearby ditch. There, he subjected her to a series of violent sexual assaults, including forcing her to perform oral sex and engaging in further sexual violence.

The case was brought before Warwick Crown Court on Wednesday, November 20, 2019. Barnes had previously pleaded guilty to the charges of rape and assault by penetration, although he initially entered a not guilty plea at the first hearing. His decision to change his plea came just days before the trial, which added additional distress to the victim and her family.

Kanwal Juss, representing the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), expressed her condemnation of Barnes’s actions. She stated, “These offences have traumatised the 76-year-old victim, and while the evidence against Barnes was overwhelming, he chose to plead not guilty until a few days before the trial, causing further distress to the victim and her family.”

Juss also highlighted the strength and bravery of the victim in coming forward to report the assault, emphasizing the importance of justice for victims of such heinous crimes. She added, “The CPS will continue to support victims and seek justice for those affected by such offending. We hope the sentence imposed on Barnes today provides some measure of comfort to her.”

The investigation was conducted by Warwickshire Police, who gathered compelling evidence including the victim’s detailed account, positive identification of Barnes by three witnesses, and DNA evidence obtained from nail scrapings. These pieces of evidence played a crucial role in securing the conviction and subsequent sentencing.

As a result of his guilty plea and conviction, Barnes was sentenced to 12 years and nine months in prison, with an extended five-year license period. The court’s decision reflects the severity of his crimes and the impact on the victim, as well as the community’s stance on such violent offences.
