July 1996 Paedophile `addict’ should not be jailed, says a judge A SELF-CONFESSED paedophile who repeatedly assaulted a ten-year-old girl walked free yesterday after a judge decided he should be treated rather than locked up. Jobless Glen Wilson, 25, admitted carrying out the sex attacks over a six-month period. The Old Bailey heard that his behaviour was discovered only after members of his family cleaned his bedroom and found women’s underwear, pornographic magazines and films, and letters confessing his desire for the little girl and others. Wilson pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault in 1995. But Judge Hitching told him he was better off continuing his treatment with a sex offenders project than `going into custody where you will probably meet someone else like you and not be helped at all’. He added that `sex offenders are, in effect, addicted to what they do and you fall under that profile’. Wilson was sentenced to three years’ probation. He was told he must continue to receive treatment at the North-East London Sex Offenders Project and have no contact with any child under 16, including members of his family, without another adult present. Judge Hitching added: `The objective of this project is to bring home the seriousness of what you have done and give you insight into the impact it has had on the victim and see that you don’t offend again.’ Wilson was also told he must live with his mother and stepfather at their home in Beckton, East London.
