GIRMAY TEKIE CAUGHT IN LEEDS BY PAEDOPHILE HUNTING TEAM AND JAILED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES
In a case that highlights the ongoing efforts to combat online grooming and child exploitation, Girmay Tekie, an immigrant originally from Ethiopia who had moved to Leeds in the United Kingdom seeking a better life away from poverty, has been sentenced to prison after being caught in a sting operation conducted by a paedophile hunting team.
Tekie appeared before Leeds Crown Court to face serious charges related to his online activities and intentions towards a minor.
The charges included attempting to incite a child aged between 13 and 15 to engage in sexual activity, as well as attempting to meet a girl under the age of 16 following grooming online.
The court proceedings revealed that in November 2017, Tekie had initiated contact with what he believed was a 14-year-old girl through an online profile.
According to court reports, Tekie engaged in a series of sexually explicit messages, openly expressing his desire to engage in sexual acts with the girl and even stating his intention to 'take her virginity.' The defendant had arranged to meet the girl in person, but the meeting was interrupted by members of the paedophile hunting team known as 'Net Justice.' When Tekie arrived at the designated meeting point, he was confronted by members of the team, who questioned him about his online activity.
It was then revealed that the girl he believed he was meeting was actually a member of the hunting team posing as a minor online in an effort to catch predators attempting to groom children.
Following the confrontation, police officers were called to the scene, and Tekie was subsequently arrested.
Despite pleading not guilty to the charges, the court found him guilty after a trial.
The judge sentenced Tekie to ten months in prison, issued a ten-year sexual harm prevention order to protect potential future victims, and mandated that he register as a sex offender for a period of ten years.
The case underscores the importance of online vigilance and the ongoing work of law enforcement and community groups in safeguarding children from sexual exploitation.
