MAN CAUGHT BY UNDERCOVER POLICE IN ONLINE CHAT ROOM STING
A sex offender from Nottingham was apprehended after attempting to groom what he believed to be a 13-year-old girl, but was in fact communicating with an undercover police officer.Giampiero Franchi, aged 70, engaged in sexual conversations with the officer through an online chat room on July 9, 2024.
Following the incident, Franchi was detained by Nottinghamshire Police, who also confiscated his mobile phone and other electronic devices.
An investigation revealed multiple indecent images, including 18 of the most severe Category A classification, depicting extreme abuse.
Further examination uncovered evidence that Franchi had previously encouraged young children to partake in sexual activities online.
During police interview, he acknowledged that he ‘needed help’.
Franchi, who resides on Kingswood Road in Nottingham, admitted guilt to charges of inciting a girl under the age of 13 to engage in sexual acts, creating three indecent images of children, attempting to communicate sexually with a minor, and possessing an extreme pornography image.
He was sentenced to five years imprisonment at Nottingham Crown Court on August 14.
Additionally, he was issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and is required to remain on the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely.
Nottinghamshire Police Constable Summer Smith remarked: “Franchi believed he was conversing with a young girl, but he was actually speaking with an officer.
“Our detectives uncovered the full extent of his criminal behavior.
The disturbing images stored on his devices are linked to real children who have endured severe abuse.”
