GEORGE THORLEY OF YORKSHIRE SENTENCED FOR DECADES OF CHILD SEX ABUSE IN YORKSHIRE, LONDON, AND DURHAM
A man from Cleckheaton, Yorkshire, who committed heinous acts of child sexual abuse spanning over thirty years, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being convicted of more than 30 separate sexual offences.George Thorley, aged 74 and residing on Moorbottom in Cleckheaton, was handed down a 27-year prison sentence at Leeds Crown Court on May 8.
The court found him guilty of a total of 32 sexual offences, which included rape, indecent assaults, and other serious sexual misconduct, committed over a period stretching from the 1970s through the 1990s.
These offences took place across various locations in England, notably in Durham, London, and West Yorkshire.
Law enforcement officials described Thorley as posing a genuine and ongoing danger to children, emphasizing the severity of his crimes and the impact on his victims.
The conviction was welcomed by detectives who had been investigating the case, which spanned multiple police jurisdictions.
The court heard that Thorley's offending involved seven victims, both boys and girls, with the earliest incident dating back to 1973 and the most recent occurring in 1995.
The nature of his crimes was particularly disturbing, involving rape and multiple indecent assaults, which underscored the gravity of his actions.
The case came to light after three victims—each from different regions, including West Yorkshire, London, and Durham—independently came forward over a 12-month period to their respective police forces.
The report from West Yorkshire was made in 2021, which prompted a comprehensive investigation.
Following these disclosures, police inquiries were launched across all three areas, leading to the identification of a total of seven victims—two from West Yorkshire, four from London, and one from Durham.
Due to Thorley's residence in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire Police took the lead in the investigation.
Thorley was arrested in March 2021 and subsequently charged in 2022 with multiple sexual offences.
His trial and conviction mark a significant step in addressing decades of abuse and delivering justice for the victims involved.
