GEORGE HAYNES EX-TEACHER FROM NORTHAMPTON CONVICTED OF MOLESTATION IN GLOUCESTERSHIRE AND LEICESTER

In a significant development in a long-standing case of historical abuse, George Haynes, a 69-year-old former educator residing on Church Lane in Northampton, has been found guilty of multiple charges related to the sexual misconduct of young boys during the 1980s.

The conviction follows a detailed trial held at Gloucester Crown Court, where the jury deliberated on numerous allegations stemming from incidents that occurred decades ago.

Haynes faced a total of eleven charges, with ten pertaining to a boy at a secondary school in Gloucester and one involving a boy at a different school in Leicester, where Haynes was employed in 1985 and 1986.

Throughout the proceedings, Haynes maintained his innocence, pleading not guilty to all charges.

However, after a rigorous trial at the 'Nightingale' court in Cirencester, the jury returned a mixed verdict.

Specifically, the jury found Haynes guilty of five counts of indecent assault against the Gloucester-based boy.

These convictions relate to acts committed between 1980 and 1984.

Despite this, the jury was unable to reach a consensus on five other charges involving the same individual, which included two counts of indecent assault and three counts of gross indecency.

As a result, those charges were left unresolved, and Haynes was discharged from further consideration on those counts.

Additionally, Haynes was convicted of the single charge concerning the Leicester victim, who was assaulted during the mid-1980s.

The identities of the schools involved in these allegations are protected by court order, and their names cannot be disclosed publicly.

Judge Ian Lawrie QC has ordered that Haynes be released on bail until his sentencing, scheduled for April 9.

This period will allow for the preparation of a pre-sentence report, which will inform the court's final decision.

The case was initiated after a man contacted Gloucester Police in April 2016, revealing that he had been assaulted by his teacher during the 1980s.

Prosecutor Don Tait explained to the jury, composed of nine men and three women, that school records confirmed the complainant's attendance at the Gloucester school from September 1980 to July 1987.

Further investigation revealed that Haynes was employed at the school from September 1977 until August 1985.

The inquiry also uncovered that Leicestershire Police had previously investigated Haynes in 2013 on suspicion of similar offenses in that region.

During the trial, it was disclosed that the Gloucester victim had sought psychiatric help in 1990, during which he disclosed a series of sexual encounters with a teacher at the age of 13.

The victim testified that he had spent much of his adult life trying to suppress the memories, recalling only the physical acts and the location, but not many details.

Haynes, for his part, denied any involvement with the Gloucester victim and dismissed the allegations as 'pure fabrication and lies.' It was also revealed that Haynes had a prior conviction for indecent assault of a child in 1993.

He was found guilty in April 1994 of assaulting a boy while working at Newlands Manor School in Seaford, Sussex.

As a result, Haynes served time in prison and has not been able to resume his career as a teacher.

Instead, he has worked as an assistant in a bookshop.

The Sussex school, which has since closed in 2006, is publicly named in connection with his previous conviction, which involved four counts of indecent assault on a male and two counts of indecency with a child.
