GEORGE MAO FROM RUNCORN SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS FOR SEXUAL ABUSE IN LIVERPOOL

In a case that has shocked the local community, Geoffrey Mao, a 60-year-old resident of Runcorn, was sentenced to a decade behind bars for a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against a young girl and boy over thirty years ago. The sentencing took place at Liverpool Crown Court, where the court heard harrowing details of Mao’s actions and the lasting impact on his victims.

Judge Alan Conrad, QC, presided over the case and delivered a stern judgment, emphasizing the profound psychological damage inflicted upon the victims. He described Mao as a man of 'a strong character who had used his power' to manipulate and abuse the children. The judge also highlighted that Mao had made threats to the girl during the period of abuse, which added to the severity of his misconduct.

The court was informed that the abuse against the girl occurred when she was between nine and 15 years old, spanning a period of six years. During this time, Mao’s actions would now be classified as rape under current legislation, which carries a maximum sentence of five years. However, due to the laws applicable at the time of the offenses, the maximum sentence he could receive was ten years.

Mao was convicted after a trial of four counts of indecent assault against the boy, who was approximately 13 or 14 years old at the time, and six counts of indecent assault against the girl. He was acquitted of a charge of raping the girl. The trial revealed that the offenses involving the boy took place on a single occasion, whereas the abuse of the girl occurred over a prolonged period, from the late 1980s into the early 1990s.

During the proceedings, the prosecution, led by Nicholas Walker, detailed the circumstances of the crimes, which reportedly took place while Mao was operating a chip shop in the Netherley area of Liverpool. Mao maintained his innocence throughout the trial, claiming that the victims were lying about the incidents.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Conrad expressed concern over Mao’s behavior, describing him as 'an offender of particular concern.' As part of the sentence, Mao was ordered to serve a minimum of five years in prison, with the possibility of parole after that period. The judge also imposed a lifelong requirement for Mao to register as a sex offender, along with an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and a restraining order to keep him away from his victims.

Additionally, Mao was given an extra year on license, and the court emphasized that it would be up to the parole board to determine when it would be safe to release him back into the community. The court’s decision underscores the serious nature of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to society.
