GEORGE BROOKSBANK'S SHOCKING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY SCANDAL IN BLACKPOOL

In April 2016, a disturbing case emerged involving an elderly man from Blackpool who had become entangled in a serious criminal activity related to child exploitation images.

The individual, identified as Geoffrey Brooksbank, an 82-year-old resident of Lytham Road in South Shore, was found to have amassed a vast collection of indecent images and videos depicting children as young as six years old.

Brooksbank’s arrest was the result of a police investigation that uncovered more than 100 pieces of computer equipment at his home, all containing highly disturbing material.

The authorities discovered that he had downloaded and stored a total of 6,495 images across numerous laptops, external hard drives, and memory sticks.

During questioning, Brooksbank claimed to have led an asexual life and described himself as “a latent gay,” although he insisted he had never acted on any such desires.

Despite his age and the fact that he had no prior criminal record, the offences were deemed extremely grave.

The case was brought before Preston Crown Court, where Brooksbank appeared to face the consequences of his actions.

He was visibly supported by a walking frame as he listened to the court proceedings.

The court was informed that Brooksbank had suffered two heart attacks since the police raid in October 2014, highlighting his fragile health.

He pleaded guilty to charges of making and possessing a significant number of indecent images, which had been stored across multiple devices.

The judge, Mr.

Justice Sweeney, emphasized the severity of the case, stating, “It is clear that these images were gathered over a significant period of time and that you were addicted to images of this type.

You subscribed to an internet site in Canada through which you purchased these images.” The judge expressed regret that such offences could occur at Brooksbank’s advanced age, noting that he had no previous convictions.

However, he underscored the seriousness of the crimes, stating, “Without people like you who make and possess such images, they wouldn’t appear in the way that they do on the internet.” Furthermore, the court was made aware of Brooksbank’s current health status, as he was now residing in a care home with no access to such material.

The judge expressed concern about his ability to cope in a custodial environment, given his health issues.

The police had discovered his activities after executing a search of his residence, which led to his immediate acknowledgment of guilt.

In sentencing, Mr.

Justice Sweeney acknowledged that, in some cases, a prison sentence could be suspended if there were significant personal mitigation.

However, given the gravity of Brooksbank’s offences, the court decided that an immediate custodial sentence was justified.

Brooksbank was sentenced to eight months in prison and was also subject to a sexual harm prevention order to prevent future offences.

This case highlights the disturbing reality of how internet-enabled crimes can affect individuals of all ages, and the importance of law enforcement in uncovering and prosecuting such serious offences, regardless of the offender’s age or background.
