BRADFORD MAN GAVIN THORPE SENTENCED AFTER BRUTAL ATTACK ON EX-GIRLFRIEND'S COMPANION IN BRADFORD CITY CENTRE

A violent assault originating from Bradford has resulted in the imprisonment of Gavin Thorpe, a man whose actions left a man with severe facial injuries requiring extensive surgical intervention. The incident unfolded in the city centre, highlighting a disturbing episode of unprovoked violence that culminated in a lengthy legal process and a significant custodial sentence.

According to court reports, Gavin Thorpe, aged 39 and residing on Cross Road off Toller Lane in Bradford, initiated the confrontation on December 21 of the previous year. His motive appeared to be an attempt to reconcile with his estranged girlfriend, whom he sought to meet at The Drum Winder pub around 9 pm. However, his efforts were thwarted when she, accompanied by another man, refused to engage in conversation. This rejection prompted Thorpe to react aggressively, first by physically assaulting the male companion, knocking him to the ground with a punch, and then leaving the pub in a state of agitation.

Following this altercation, the couple left the pub and went to the woman’s flat, where her face was treated for injuries sustained earlier. Approximately ten minutes later, the tranquility was shattered by loud banging in the corridor outside her residence and on the door of her flat. Without warning, Thorpe forcefully kicked his way through the door and launched a brutal attack on the man, delivering multiple punches that caused him to collapse onto a bed. The violence was so severe that a security guard, called to the scene, observed blood emanating from the victim’s eye socket and promptly summoned emergency services.

The victim was transported to Bradford Royal Infirmary, where a CT scan revealed multiple fractures across his face, including injuries to the skull base, right cheekbone, nose, eye socket, and jawbone. The injuries necessitated surgical intervention, during which three metal plates were implanted to stabilize his cheekbone and eye socket. The operation resulted in permanent scarring, serving as a stark reminder of the assault.

Gavin Thorpe was detained the following day and subsequently pleaded guilty to charges of actual bodily harm and section 20 wounding against the male victim. It was noted during proceedings that the woman involved, described by prosecutor Alisha Kaye as “the catalyst for the incident occurring,” was unharmed in the attack. Thorpe, who appeared via video link from HMP Leeds where he had been held on remand for 200 days, expressed remorse and acknowledged that his relationship with the woman had ended, indicating his readiness to move forward as a single man.

In sentencing, His Honour Judge Colin Burn sentenced Thorpe to two years in prison for the assault, with an additional four months to run concurrently for the bodily harm charge. The judge condemned Thorpe’s actions as entirely unprovoked and excessively violent, emphasizing that the attack was persistent and brutal. He described the assault as a clear example of unprovoked violence, noting the multiple fractures and permanent plates in the victim’s face as lasting consequences of the attack. The judge also imposed a ten-year restraining order, prohibiting Thorpe from having any contact with the victim, underscoring the seriousness of the incident and the need for protection against further harm.
