RUGELEY CARE WORKER JAILED FOR ELDERLY ABUSE
Gary Walker, a former care home worker, has been sentenced for abusing elderly residents under his care.He was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison after evidence showed he sprayed water into the face of an 81-year-old woman to prompt her movement while she was in the shower.
Walker also threw a wet flannel at an 82-year-old man, causing him to squirm as he pressed the cloth against his face.
Furthermore, he admitted to turning off a pressure-sensitive mat in the room of an 88-year-old man on three separate occasions; this device was crucial for alerting staff if the resident attempted to get out of bed due to a significant fall risk.
During the court hearing, Walker was described as someone who cared, and he expressed remorse; however, his actions constituted wilful neglect.
Following the sentencing, he was dismissed from his position at the Horse Fair Care Home by Avery Healthcare Group and ordered to pay an £80 victim surcharge.
He was also banned from working with vulnerable groups again.
The court observed that friends and relatives of the victims were visibly upset as Walker was taken away to serve his sentence.
Prosecutors highlighted that his multiple instances of neglect and abuse led to his conviction and subsequent punishment.
