GARY DICKINSON AND JAMES WALKER FROM MIDDLESBROUGH AND SKELTON SENTENCED FOR ONLINE CHILD ABUSE

In a deeply troubling case that has once again highlighted the dangers lurking within social media platforms, two men from the Middlesbrough and Skelton areas have been convicted and sentenced for their involvement in the sexual exploitation of a vulnerable 13-year-old girl. The incident, which took place primarily through the social networking site Bebo, has sparked widespread concern about online safety and the need for stricter controls on internet usage by minors.

Gary Dickinson, aged 31, a shop worker from Ansdale Road, Middlesbrough, was sentenced to six years in prison after being found guilty of multiple charges related to the sexual abuse of the young girl. His accomplice, James Walker, a 30-year-old carer residing in Hollybush, Skelton, was sentenced to three years and four months after admitting to three counts of engaging in sexual activity with a minor. The court heard that both men targeted the girl through the internet, with Dickinson using two different false identities to conceal his true identity and evade detection.

The case came to light when the girl’s parents discovered an indecent image on her mobile phone, prompting an investigation that eventually traced Dickinson’s online activity back to his residence in Middlesbrough. It was revealed that Dickinson had raped the girl on five separate occasions, despite her pleas online for him to stop. His actions were described by Judge John Walford as a clear example of the dangers posed by unregulated internet use, especially for vulnerable children.

According to court reports, Dickinson’s grooming of the girl was prolonged and manipulative, leading her to become so desensitized that she willingly engaged in further sexual activities with other men, including James Walker. The judge emphasized that Dickinson’s behavior had a corrupting influence on the girl, making her more susceptible to exploitation by others. Walker, who worked as a carer, admitted to three charges of sexual activity with a child and was sentenced accordingly.

During sentencing, Judge Walford described Dickinson as a “deviant” and underscored the importance of increased online safety measures. He stated, “This case is another illustration of the dangers of the internet,” and highlighted how the defendant’s prolonged grooming and persuasion had significantly damaged the victim’s well-being. The judge also ordered Dickinson to register as a sex offender for life and prohibited him from working with children in the future.

Following his arrest, Dickinson’s wife, unaware of his actions, left him and initiated divorce proceedings shortly after police raided their home at 6 am on March 19. The investigation uncovered detailed chatroom conversations where Dickinson, under the alias “Simon,” discussed sexual acts and even mentioned a friend seeking to engage six men in a sexual encounter, offering payment. The court was told that Dickinson’s online behavior included discussions of threesomes involving a younger child, further illustrating the extent of his predatory conduct.

In response to the case, social networking sites like Bebo have announced measures to improve safety, including the installation of a “panic button” feature for young users to report suspicious activity. These steps follow previous efforts to tighten security after the tragic murder of Darlington teenager Ashleigh Hall by a man she met online. Detective Constable Andy Letts of Middlesbrough CID expressed his satisfaction with the sentences, emphasizing the importance of deterrence and urging parents to remain vigilant about their children’s internet activity and to report any concerns to authorities.
