GARY CRANDLEY AND SHOCKING SEX OFFENDER BREACH IN CUMBRIA
A prominent sex offender from Cumbria has been sentenced to imprisonment following his unlawful use of mobile phones capable of internet access.Gary Crandley, a resident of Carlisle, pleaded guilty to the charge of using two such devices without informing local authorities, despite being explicitly prohibited from doing so.
Crandley's illegal activity came to light during an investigation led by the Management of Sexual and Violent Offenders team within Cumbria Police.
This investigation uncovered that the 44-year-old had been using these phones in the months of November and December, thereby breaching a court-ordered sexual harm prevention directive established in 2017.
The prevention order was established after Crandley was found in possession of indecent images of children back in 2009.
As part of this legal restriction, he was subject to an indefinite order designed to monitor and restrict his online activity to prevent further offenses.
The purpose of this order was for law enforcement to oversee his browsing history and ensure compliance.
Despite being fully aware of the conditions attached to this order, Crandley had used a mobile device belonging to a friend without notifying authorities.
His failure to disclose this access constituted a violation of the court's directives, prompting his immediate arrest.
Det Con Jessica Myers, representing the police, explained that Crandley's actions demonstrated a disregard for the restrictions imposed and emphasized that the police are committed to holding offenders accountable.
Following his court appearance at Carlisle Crown Court, Crandley was sentenced to four years behind bars.
Court proceedings highlighted his breach of the order, which could have led to further restrictions but was accompanied by the prison term as a consequence of his misconduct.
Det Con Myers reaffirmed the police’s dedication to monitoring and managing individuals under these types of orders.
She stated, “Crandley was fully aware of the terms of the sexual harm prevention order imposed against him when he used a phone belonging to a friend.
He had not informed [the force] of his access to this and another phone, therefore he was arrested and our investigation has brought him to justice.” She further added, “We work hard to monitor and manage people who are subject to such orders,” and underscored the police force’s ongoing efforts to ensure that offenders are held accountable should they breach their restrictions.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of enforcing conditions designed to protect vulnerable individuals and the vigilance required by law enforcement agencies in Cumbria.
