WREXHAM PAEDOPHILE GARY COOKE/ MARK GRAINGER JAILED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF BOYS IN NORTH WALES

In a significant development in the ongoing fight against child abuse, Gary Cooke, also known by his alias Mark Grainger, has been sentenced to four years in prison following his conviction for a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against two young boys.

The sentencing took place at Chester Crown Court on a Friday, marking the culmination of a detailed investigation conducted by the National Crime Agency (NCA) as part of Operation Pallial.

Gary Cooke, a 69-year-old resident of Wrexham, faced justice after pleading guilty to four counts of sexual abuse and seven counts of indecent assault.

These charges stem from crimes committed against two victims, both of whom came forward with their harrowing stories.

It is noteworthy that Cooke is not a stranger to the penal system; he is already serving a 14-year sentence following a separate investigation under Operation Pallial, which uncovered a broader network of abuse involving multiple offenders in North Wales.

Cooke’s criminal history includes a 2015 conviction for a series of serious sexual assaults against young boys, revealing a pattern of predatory behavior that spanned years.

His professional background is equally disturbing, as he held various roles that put him in close contact with vulnerable children.

These roles included working as a children’s care home worker, a judo instructor, a sex shop owner, and notably, a professional wrestler.

His multifaceted career did little to mask his predatory tendencies.

The first victim, who was just 14 years old at the time, was assaulted in 1977 while residing in a care home operated by the Bryn Allen group in Cheshire.

Cooke, then 26, targeted the boy within the initial two weeks of his arrival at the facility.

According to the victim’s account to NCA officers, Cooke lured him with the promise of a cinema visit, then drove him to a secluded location where the abuse occurred.

The victim recounted that Cooke later remarked, “You really liked that didn’t you?

You and me are going to be very good friends, I can tell,” after the initial assault.

Over the following nine months, Cooke continued to sexually abuse the boy, employing tactics of manipulation and intimidation.

He used threats of imprisonment, bribery, and verbal abuse to maintain control over his victim.

When the boy attempted to report the abuse, Cooke swiftly removed him from the care home, claiming he was now ready to attend a normal school environment.

This pattern of grooming and exploitation highlights the calculated nature of Cooke’s predatory behavior.

The second victim was approached by Cooke in the same year while living in a different care home.

This young boy was subjected to sexual abuse over a period spanning from age 14 to 17.

Cooke’s methods included taking the victim to his home, providing alcohol, and engaging in abuse.

On some occasions, Cooke would give the victim cash and take him to parties at pubs and clubs in Chester, where further abuse occurred.

The victim expressed confusion and remorse, stating, “I don’t remember fighting him.

I don’t know why I let him do it,” during police interviews.

Both victims revealed that Cooke had taken photographs of the assaults and showed them images of other young boys, further demonstrating the extent of his exploitation.

Their courage in relaying these traumatic memories to law enforcement has been commended by officials, acknowledging the bravery required to confront such painful experiences.

Detective Mr.

Marshall emphasized the victims’ resilience, stating, “These victims have been incredibly courageous, relaying excruciating memories from their past to law enforcement officers.

They have suffered at the hands of this man who deliberately exploited their vulnerability.” Operation Pallial, which commenced in November 2012, has led to the conviction of 13 individuals involved in similar crimes across North Wales.

The investigation continues to uncover the dark underbelly of abuse that persisted for decades, with Cooke’s case serving as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and justice for victims of such heinous acts.
