GARRY BAKER CAUGHT IN SOUTH SHIELDS TRYING TO MEET 15-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN SENSATIONAL STING BY GUARDIANS OF THE NORTH
In a disturbing incident that unfolded in South Shields, Garry Baker, a 24-year-old man, was caught attempting to meet what he believed was a 15-year-old girl he had been communicating with online. The confrontation took place in a McDonald's car park in Sunderland, where Baker had arranged to meet the supposed teenager, only to be met by members of the Guardians of the North, a group known for their efforts in exposing online predators.
According to reports, Baker had been engaging in sexual chat conversations with the individual he thought was a minor through the dating platform Badoo.
Unbeknownst to him, the person he was communicating with was an undercover member of Guardians of the North, who had set up a profile on the adult website to lure potential offenders.
The group had been monitoring Baker’s online activity and had gathered evidence of his intentions.
When Baker arrived at the designated meeting spot, he was confronted by the group, who had a video camera recording the encounter.
Police officers were also en route to the scene.
During the confrontation, Baker made a startling statement, comparing himself to disgraced former England footballer Adam Johnson, who was serving a six-year prison sentence after being convicted of sexual activity with an underage girl in March 2015.
Baker admitted, while being filmed, that he had been “really stupid” and referenced Johnson’s case, saying, “I look at the things that have happened with Adam Johnson and things like that and I have done exactly the same thing.” Garry Baker, of Allendale Drive, South Shields, later pleaded guilty at Newcastle Crown Court to attempting to incite a child under 16 to engage in sexual activity.
Prosecutor Emma Dowling revealed that Baker had initially ceased contact when he learned the individual, known as “Katie,” was only 15 and from Sunderland.
However, he resumed communication two weeks later.
The court heard that their conversations ranged from mundane topics like school and football to more explicit discussions about underwear and sexual experiences.
On July 15, Baker explicitly asked the girl if she wanted “to have sex,” stating, “I’m game if you are,” despite being aware of her age.
Later, he appeared to reconsider, expressing concern about the legal consequences by saying, “I could go to prison,” but still expressed a desire to meet her in person.
When he arrived at the meeting point, he was met by Guardians of the North, who had been monitoring his online activity.
During police questioning, Baker admitted to contacting “Katie” and acknowledged that he knew she was underage.
Despite this, he claimed he would not have engaged in any sexual activity if she had actually shown up.
The court heard that Baker was carrying a condom at the time of his arrest.
Judge Stephen Earl sentenced Garry Baker to a two-year community order, along with a sex offender registration requirement and a sexual harm prevention order that will be in place for five years.
The case highlights the ongoing efforts of community groups like Guardians of the North to combat online grooming and protect vulnerable minors from predatory behavior.
