July 2006 SEX BEAST JAILED FOR ATTACKS ON GIRL A SEX beast given a caution for attacking a 10-year-old boy went on to abuse a schoolgirl, a court has heard. Darren Chalmers was not prosecuted despite admitting abusing the young boy on about five separate occasions in the late 1990s. Instead, he was put on the sex offenders’ register when the offences came to light in 2004 – and he was left free to continue abusing a girl he had been attacking since she was 12. Despite being monitored by police, Chalmers abused the youngster on numerous occasions. And he managed to convince the authorities he was in no regular contact with any child whatsoever. Disgusted After being collared for the attacks on the schoolgirl, Chalmers “giggled” when asked why he had lied about having no access to potential victims. Newcastle Crown Court heard how the 28-year-old indecently assaulted the schoolgirl between January 2002 and April 2005. During that time, Chalmers had relationships with two women, fathering children to both. His girlfriend when he was arrested, who was pregnant at the time, was “horrified and disgusted” when she discovered the truth about him, the court was told. Prosecutor Diane Spence told how the pervert was able to continue his sickening campaign because the victim was too scared to confide in her parents. But the tormented teen eventually broke her silence and told a family member about her ordeal. When asked in her police interview what she thought of Chalmers, the victim said: “I don’t know, words cannot describe what I think of him.” Chalmers, of Galsworthy Road, Whiteleas, South Shields, admitted three charges of indecent assault and one of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. Defence barrister Roger Moore said: “He has shown a desire to have matters sorted out, to have help and treatment, that’s a good sign. “He acknowledges he needs help.” Mr Moore said Chalmers functions on a “pretty simple basis” and added: “He smiles at all the wrong times, he giggles on all the wrong occasions”. Judge Guy Whitburn jailed the pervert for six years and extended his licence period for four years. The judge told him: “It is quite clear you are unable to tell the truth or faceup to the type of sexual offences you have committed over the years. “You will require strong management when you are released from prison.”
