ENFIELD MAN FOUND GUILTY OF KILLING MOTHER WITH STEERING LOCK
Gareth Jackson, a 52-year-old man with mental health issues, was convicted of the murder of his 84-year-old mother, Lesma Jackson, at their residence in Enfield. The jury determined that during her visit to his home, Jackson attacked her with a steering lock, causing severe head injuries described as catastrophic.
The trial took place at the Old Bailey, with the prosecution emphasizing Jackson's mental health problems as a key factor in the incident.
Police officers had to forcibly enter Jackson's home when he refused to open the door, discovering Mrs Jackson's body inside.
The steering lock used as a weapon was located next to Jackson’s bed.
During police interviews, Jackson claimed the death was accidental.
It was also revealed that he was suffering from a serious mental illness at the time and was deemed unfit to stand trial for murder.
Despite this, the jury found that Jackson did commit the act after a special trial on the issue.
The case is now adjourned pending sentencing.
