GARETH HODGKINSON FROM BLACKPOOL FACES JAIL OVER CHILD ABUSE IMAGES SCANDAL
In June 2018, a disturbing case unfolded involving Gareth Michael Hodgkinson, a 37-year-old network rail worker residing in Blackpool, who was accused of possessing a large collection of indecent images of children. The investigation began when police officers visited Hodgkinson's home in Normoss, Blackpool, on August 30, 2016, after receiving information that prompted a search of his property.
During the search, authorities seized various computer equipment, which Hodgkinson voluntarily agreed to have examined at the police station.
Initially, Hodgkinson denied any knowledge of the illicit material stored on his devices.
However, the subsequent forensic analysis revealed a staggering total of 1,441 images depicting child abuse.
These images primarily featured children estimated to be between the ages of eight and ten.
Among these, 253 were classified as Category A, indicating the most severe level of abuse, while 249 fell into Category B, and 939 into Category C.
Additionally, investigators found two video clips categorized as A, although these files were described as inaccessible, suggesting they had been viewed and subsequently deleted.
Hodgkinson was formally interviewed by police in December 2017, as the backlog in analyzing such material was considerable.
During the interview, he maintained his innocence and claimed to have no specialized knowledge of the images.
Prosecutor Frances McEntee revealed that Hodgkinson suggested the images might have been downloaded while he was at work, which was at a hotel, and that a guest could have had access to his computer.
More significantly, Hodgkinson indicated that his wife was the only other person with access to his computer.
Police checked her work schedule and found that on at least four occasions, she could not have been responsible for downloading the images because she was at her job during those times.
Despite his claims, the investigation confirmed that Hodgkinson's wife was not involved in the downloading of the images.
Over a period of six years, Hodgkinson admitted to making and possessing indecent images of children, with three counts of production and one count of possession.
The judge, Mr.
Justice Dove, described the images as the most disgusting kind, emphasizing their unlawful nature as evidence of child abuse that Hodgkinson was exploiting for his own gratification.
The judge pointed out that Hodgkinson had no reasonable explanation or justification for his actions and accused him of attempting to implicate others, including his loved ones, when confronted.
In sentencing, Mr.
Justice Dove decided to suspend Hodgkinson's 12-month prison sentence for two years, considering his remorse.
Additionally, Hodgkinson was ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work and participate in a rehabilitation activity.
He was also placed under a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and required to register as a sex offender for the same period, reflecting the seriousness of his offending and the ongoing risk to the community.
