BRADFORD MAN JAILED FOR SERIOUS SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST CHILDREN
A MAN who committed serious sexual offences against children is beginning a lengthy prison sentence.
Gareth Hemmingway was handed 13 years in jail plus an extra year on licence by a judge at Bradford Crown Court, along with a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
The 40-year-old must also register as a sex offender for life.
The court heard a statement from one of Hemmingway’s victims, who said his assault "changed who I am." It was noted that Hemmingway, of no fixed abode and appearing via video link from HMP Leeds, had previous convictions but none for sexual offences.
Sentencing Hemmingway, who was described as “a defendant of particular concern,” Mr.
Recorder Mark McKone stated: “Your very serious offending is likely to affect all [the] victims for their whole lives.” The judge sentenced him to a total of 13 years’ imprisonment plus a year on licence and explained: “The parole board will first consider your release when you have served two-thirds of the sentence, less time on remand.
You will not be released if you continue to pose a significant risk of causing serious harm, essentially if it is likely that you will sexually abuse other girls in the future.” He also commended the victims for their courage in giving evidence at Hemmingway’s trial.
The court emphasized that Hemmingway is "a defendant of particular concern," highlighting the gravity of his offenses and the lifelong impact on his victims.
