GARETH FEENEY CAUGHT IN LEEDS SEX PICTURE SCANDAL WITH FAKE PROFILE
In a disturbing case that unfolded in Leeds, Gareth Feeney was apprehended at his residence after engaging in a series of inappropriate online communications with what he believed was a 13-year-old girl. The incident highlights the dangers of online predators and the importance of vigilant law enforcement efforts to combat such crimes.
According to court proceedings, Feeney, aged 33 and residing on Bawn Avenue in Farnley, was actively involved in sending explicit images of himself via WhatsApp, under the false assumption that these images would be viewed by a minor.
His actions included not only sharing sexually explicit photographs but also engaging in conversations that suggested a desire to meet the girl in person and have sexual relations.
The Leeds Crown Court heard that the police investigation was initiated after Feeney made contact with a Facebook profile created by an adult woman acting as a decoy to catch online predators.
This fake profile was designed to lure individuals seeking inappropriate interactions with minors.
The communication between Feeney and the decoy began on November 2, 2019, when he commented on her profile picture, describing her as “fit,” and inquired whether she had a boyfriend.
Despite being informed that the profile belonged to a 13-year-old girl, Feeney persisted in his messages.
He went further to ask her to be his girlfriend, emphasizing that their relationship should remain secret from others.
The offender requested her WhatsApp contact details and even asked her to send a picture of her toes, before sending explicit images of himself in return.
During the investigation, Feeney was arrested on April 11.
He chose not to comment during police interviews but admitted to engaging in inappropriate behavior.
The court sentenced him to a 12-month prison term, which was suspended for a period of 12 months.
Additionally, he was ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid community work and participate in 30 days of rehabilitation activities aimed at addressing his behavior.
This case underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement in Leeds to combat online grooming and protect vulnerable minors from exploitation.
It also serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by online predators and the importance of vigilance in digital interactions.
