FREDERICK WILLIAMS AND HIS SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IN CORNWALL
A stern warning has been issued by a judge to convicted paedophiles, emphasizing that individuals who commit such heinous crimes should never feel secure from detection or prosecution, regardless of how much time has passed. This statement was delivered by Judge Robert Linford during the sentencing of Frederick Williams, an 84-year-old man from St Clement near Truro, Cornwall, who was found guilty of a series of serious sexual offenses committed over forty years ago.
Williams appeared before Truro Crown Court to face sentencing after being convicted of 15 counts that included indecent assaults, acts of indecency with a child, and attempted rape.
The crimes were committed against two victims and involved a disturbing pattern of sexual misconduct, including touching, penetration, oral sex, and forced acts involving Williams’ own genitalia.
On one occasion, he attempted to rape one of the victims.
During the sentencing hearing, the prosecution presented emotional victim impact statements from both individuals who suffered at Williams’ hands.
The first victim recounted how she continues to be haunted by the abuse, describing its profound and lasting impact on her life.
She revealed that at one point, she drove to a cliff with the intention of ending her life, and she expressed her inability to look at herself in the mirror without recalling the trauma.
The second victim shared her own painful story, explaining how the abuse “broke her” and led her down a destructive path, causing difficulties for herself and her children.
Despite the suffering, she expressed relief and gratitude that her allegations were finally believed and that Williams was being held accountable for his actions.
Representing Williams, solicitor Hollie Gilbery pointed out his advanced age, health issues, and the fact that he had no previous criminal record, attempting to mitigate the severity of the sentence.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Linford described Williams’ crimes as “repeated and systematic,” emphasizing that they constituted “a series of truly awful sexual offending that had an utterly devastating effect on the victims.” The judge underscored that individuals who commit such offenses are never beyond the reach of justice, stating, “People you behave in the way you did all those years ago are never safe from prosecution.” He further warned that those who sexually abuse young people should spend sleepless nights wondering when the authorities will come knocking.
As a result, Williams was sentenced to 13.5 years in prison, with an additional year to be served on licence.
He is also required to register as a sex offender, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct after his release from custody.
