FRANCIS SIMPSON SHOCKING SEX OFFENSES IN WIGAN AND CHORLEY REVEALED

In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the communities of Wigan and Chorley, former parish priest Francis Simpson has been convicted of a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against young boys decades ago. The 71-year-old, who previously served at Worsley Mesnes St Jude’s Church in Wigan during the 1980s and later at St Chad’s in Chorley after relocating in 2016, was found guilty of nine counts of indecent assault following a comprehensive 10-day trial at Bolton Crown Court.

Details of the case revealed that Simpson engaged in inappropriate sexual touching of young boys while acting as a priest. The abuse reportedly occurred during visits to the victims’ homes, in his car during trips, and, in one particularly distressing instance, even occurred in a classroom setting. The victims ranged in age from just seven to fifteen years old at the time of the assaults.

The court heard that the abuse took place primarily at Worsley Mesnes St Jude’s Church in Wigan during the 1980s. It was also established that Simpson’s misconduct was not linked to his later tenure at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Kirkstone Road West, Litherland, where he served before moving to Chorley in 2016. Despite his denial of the nine counts of indecent assault, the jury deliberated for two days before returning guilty verdicts on all counts.

Records from 2017 indicated that Simpson was on “administrative leave” from his position at St Chad’s in Chorley, where he had been appointed after his move in 2016. Prior to his time in Chorley, Simpson had served as a parish priest in Litherland, Merseyside. His arrest by Greater Manchester Police last year led to his suspension by the Archdiocese of Liverpool, and he is now permanently barred from working with children or returning to any ministerial role within the church.

Following his conviction, Simpson was sentenced to be placed on the Sex Offender’s Register for ten years. Additionally, he is explicitly prohibited from engaging in any future employment involving children. Currently residing at Knightscliffe Crescent in Shevington, Wigan, Simpson’s criminal actions have left a lasting scar on the victims and the wider community, highlighting the ongoing need for vigilance and justice in cases of historical abuse.
