FRANCIS BEAUMONT'S HORRIFIC ABUSE IN LEEDS: DECADES OF RAPE AND THREATS REVEALED

In a harrowing case that has spanned over three decades, the justice system has finally brought to light the disturbing crimes committed by Francis Beaumont, a former university lecturer from Leeds.

The 79-year-old man was convicted of multiple heinous offenses involving his own daughter, whom he subjected to years of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse, beginning when she was just 11 years old.

Beaumont, who taught histology at a university, began his abusive actions during a period when he and his daughter were living in Kenya.

During this time, he would often intoxicate her with alcohol, a tactic that contributed to her long-standing struggle with alcoholism later in life.

The victim, now an adult woman, recounted how her father forced her to take the contraceptive pill, resulting in two abortions after she became pregnant twice.

Despite their return to Guiseley, Leeds, Beaumont continued his abusive behavior, raping her repeatedly until she was 20 years old.

The court heard that Beaumont was responsible for five separate rape offenses committed between 1979 and 1985.

These crimes included an incident when the victim was 14 years old, during which Beaumont took her to a hotel after visiting her at her boarding school on the east coast of Yorkshire.

The final assault occurred at his home in Guiseley in 1985.

Throughout the trial, the jury was informed that the victim confided in her mother about the abuse in the same year, but a police report was filed only to be retracted after Beaumont arranged for her to sign a legal retraction through a solicitor.

The victim, who bravely testified in court, described her terror of her father, who threatened to kill her if she ever disclosed the abuse.

She recounted how Beaumont threatened to dissolve her body in sulfuric acid and dispose of her remains in the Kenyan bush if she revealed the truth.

She also revealed that he kept a plastic carrier bag under his pillow, threatening to suffocate her with it.

Her testimony painted a picture of a young girl living in constant fear and control, with Beaumont's manipulative tactics designed to degrade and dominate her.

In her victim impact statement, read aloud in court, she expressed a mixture of pain, resilience, and forgiveness.

She stated, “You dad, have taken enough of my precious life, I don’t hate you but instead I feel sorry for you.

You are sick, you cannot see that.

You were loved, you couldn’t see that either.

Now you have nothing.” The statement also detailed how her father's abuse robbed her of her innocence, fun, and sense of security, describing how he kept her isolated from peers, monitored her friendships, and was always present in her life, even when not directly in view.

She shared her ongoing struggles with addiction, attributing her alcoholism to the alcohol she was given by her father during her childhood.

Despite building a happy family life with her husband and children, she admitted that the emotional scars from her past still lingered, causing her to experience flashbacks, guilt, and shame.

Her letter to her father in 2007, which she said he ignored, was a poignant reminder of her suffering.

She described how she felt dehumanized, viewing herself as nothing more than a sexual object for her father’s gratification.

Beaumont’s attempts to deny and distort the truth extended into his trial.

Initially, he lied to police after his arrest in 2015, denying any sexual contact with his daughter.

During the trial, he claimed that their relationship was consensual when she was 17 and even suggested that she had seduced him.

He also attempted to convince the court that she was not his biological daughter, a claim rejected by the jury.

Judge Tom Bayliss, QC, sentenced Beaumont to 20 years in prison, emphasizing that the crimes constituted a “campaign of rape.” The judge described Beaumont as an intelligent man who deliberately sought to degrade his daughter, asserting that his actions were calculated to make her submissive and compliant.

The judge also noted Beaumont’s poor health and expressed the likelihood that he would die in custody.

In his remarks, Judge Bayliss underscored the importance of accountability, stating, “Those who sexually abuse children must realize, as you now realize, that it will have consequences after it comes to light — even if that reckoning is years and years after the abuse.” He condemned Beaumont’s manipulative and predatory behavior, which had devastated the life of a young girl who once loved and trusted him.

The case serves as a stark reminder that justice can prevail, even after many years of silence and suffering.
