EDINBURGH DRIVING INSTRUCTOR FINDLAY MUNRO CONVICTED OF SEXUAL ASSAULTS ON TEENAGERS

In a series of disturbing revelations, Findlay Munro, a driving instructor based in Edinburgh, has been found guilty of multiple sexual offenses committed against teenage pupils during driving lessons.

The case, which has spanned several years, highlights a pattern of predatory behavior that has only recently come to light through a comprehensive police investigation.

Munro, aged 63, appeared at Edinburgh’s sheriff court on a recent Wednesday to face charges related to the sexual misconduct involving eight victims.

The court heard that Munro had previously admitted to targeting four young women, aged 17 and 18, during lessons, where he engaged in inappropriate touching and made lewd comments.

Despite a lenient sentence last year, further evidence uncovered new allegations dating back to 2014, revealing a troubling history of misconduct.

Specifically, Munro was convicted of touching a 17-year-old girl’s leg without her consent during lessons conducted between August 2014 and April 2015.

He also admitted to repeatedly touching another 17-year-old’s leg during lessons from September 2015 to March 2016.

In addition, Munro pleaded guilty to making inappropriate remarks about a third pupil’s appearance for sexual gratification between September 2015 and April 2016, and similar comments about a fourth woman between December 2019 and March 2020.

The court proceedings also detailed how Munro, a resident of the Baberton area in Edinburgh, had targeted victims over a period extending from 2017 to 2021.

One mother, whose 17-year-old daughter was among the victims, recounted her distress.

She explained that her daughter, who was taking weekly two-hour lessons through Red Driving School, confided in her after the first lesson that Munro called all his pupils his “girlfriends.” The mother initially dismissed her daughter’s anxiety as nerves but later learned of the inappropriate conduct after her daughter disclosed that police were speaking to Munro’s pupils.

The mother then took action, reporting the incidents to the authorities.

Further details emerged from the court, revealing that Munro had sexually assaulted the teenage girl on multiple occasions on Edinburgh roads between December 2020 and August 2022.

During these incidents, he touched her on the head and rubbed her thigh, actions that caused significant distress.

The police investigation uncovered a pattern of behavior that spanned several years, with Munro also making sexually inappropriate comments to other victims while driving in Edinburgh city centre.

In a separate case earlier this year, Munro, then aged 62, faced similar allegations involving two teenage girls.

He was accused of touching one girl on her hand, legs, and bottom, and rubbing the thigh of another girl during driving lessons.

These incidents occurred between December 2020 and August 2021.

Munro admitted to the charges in court, and Sheriff Adrian Fraser described his actions as a serious breach of trust.

Instead of jail, Munro received a community-based disposal, which included being placed on the sex offenders register for two years and under supervision for the same period.

He was also mandated to attend “offence-focused work” sessions as directed by his supervising officer.

The court emphasized the gravity of the offenses, with Sheriff Fraser stating, “As indicated I take the view this is a very serious charge and involves a breach of trust.” The case has drawn widespread condemnation, especially considering Munro’s long tenure as a driving instructor.

The police investigation was prompted after one 17-year-old victim broke down and confided in her mother about the abuse she endured during lessons.

Her mother immediately contacted the police and informed the driving school, which resulted in Munro’s dismissal from his position.

Throughout the proceedings, Munro’s actions have been characterized as a gross violation of professional and personal boundaries, with the court highlighting the impact on the victims’ mental health and sense of safety.

The case continues to serve as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals from exploitation and abuse, especially in roles that involve trust and close contact.
