EDINBURGH MOTHER CAROLINE DUNSMORE SENTENCED FOR DECADES OF CHILD ABUSE AND RING INVOLVEMENT

In a harrowing case that has shocked the city of Edinburgh, Caroline Dunsmore was sentenced to 12 years in prison for her role in a prolonged and systematic campaign of child abuse involving her own daughter, Dana Fowley, and other young victims.

The abuse spanned over a decade, beginning when the victims were as young as six years old, and was orchestrated by a notorious paedophile ring led by Dunsmore’s late husband, Billy King, who died in 1995.

At the High Court in Edinburgh, the severity of Dunsmore’s betrayal of her own child was laid bare.

The court heard that Dunsmore, then 43, had allowed her daughter to be subjected to repeated sexual assaults, including rape, over many years.

The abuse was so pervasive that it became a 'way of life' for the young girl, Dana Fowley, who is now 27.

Despite her suffering, Dana expressed a complex mixture of feelings, stating that she still loves her mother but was also 'delighted' that Dunsmore would face justice for her actions.

Judge Lord Malcolm emphasized the gravity of the case, describing Dunsmore’s conduct as a 'grievous breach of trust' that is difficult to comprehend.

He pointed out that Dunsmore had participated fully in the abuse, neglecting her parental responsibilities and failing to protect her daughter from the horrors inflicted upon her.

The court was told that the abuse occurred throughout most of Dana’s childhood, with Dunsmore, O’Flaherty, and Petch being identified as key members of what is considered Edinburgh’s worst-ever paedophile ring.

This ring was reportedly orchestrated by Billy King, who was married to Dunsmore and who died in 1995.

John O’Flaherty, aged 50, also from Edinburgh, was sentenced to 13 years after admitting to raping Dana Fowley on at least 12 occasions.

The court heard that O’Flaherty initially denied the allegations but later admitted to having sex with Dana multiple times and acknowledged that other men were involved in abusing her.

Morris Petch, also aged 50 and from Edinburgh, was convicted of raping Dana and another girl.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum tariff of 12 years, with the possibility of parole after that period.

The case revealed that the abuse was not limited to the victims’ home environment but also took place at various locations, including a caravan in Perthshire.

Dana recounted how, during a Christmas visit in 1991, she was repeatedly raped by King, O’Flaherty, and three other men, with King’s family members, Peter and Mary King, also involved in the initial abuse when Dana was just six years old.

Dana described Peter King as the 'most sadistic' of her tormentors, recounting how he forced her to admit that she was to blame for the abuse.

Further details emerged about the cycle of violence and abuse within Dunsmore’s family.

Her father, William Dunsmore, was also a rapist who abused both his daughter and granddaughters.

He is currently serving a five-year sentence for raping Dana’s younger sister.

Dunsmore’s own history was marked by a deprived childhood, including abuse by her father and a background of poverty and alcoholism.

She married Billy King at the age of 22, after escaping her abusive marriage, and together they created an environment where paedophiles could freely visit and abuse the children.

Throughout the trial, it was revealed that Dunsmore had previously pleaded guilty to multiple rape charges, including abusing Dana Fowley between 1987 and 1995.

The court also heard that her life had been shaped by early trauma, with her father raping her from the age of six and subjecting her to severe physical abuse.

Her lawyer described her upbringing as one of 'extreme deprivation,' with her father often drunk and engaging in sexual violence against her.

Outside the court, Dana Fowley, who waived her right to anonymity, expressed a mixture of relief and ongoing pain.

She stated, 'I’m delighted, but there’s a lot of mixed emotion.

Growing up, I thought the abuse was normal because she was my Mum and I trusted her.

It was only when I became a mum myself that I knew that what she did to me is wrong.' Dana also revealed her ongoing struggle with the trauma, mentioning her desire to confront her mother someday and ask if she is truly sorry, though she doubts her mother is capable of remorse due to her mental health issues.

In addition to Dunsmore’s sentence, other individuals involved in the ring received convictions.

John O’Flaherty was sentenced to 13 years, and Morris Petch received a life sentence with a minimum of 12 years.

The case also highlighted the involvement of other adults linked to the ring, some of whom are still being investigated or are deceased.

The ring was reportedly orchestrated by Billy King, who was married to Dunsmore and is now deceased, but police continue to pursue other suspects connected to this horrific network of abuse in Edinburgh.
