ESTEFANIO GONCALVES SENTENCED IN GREAT YARMOUTH FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AND RAPE

A 23-year-old man named Estefanio Goncalves has been convicted of committing a serious sexual assault and rape against a woman in her own home in Great Yarmouth. The incident took place on the night of May 14 last year, when the victim was peacefully sleeping in her residence. According to court proceedings, Goncalves, who is a national of East Timor, was present at the victim’s home when he carried out the assault. The court heard that the victim had previously confided in her mother about the assault, as well as a prior incident that occurred at a nightclub on May 5. Her mother had encouraged her to report these incidents to the police, which she eventually did.

Goncalves was arrested two days later, on May 16, and faced multiple charges including rape and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Despite denying the allegations, Goncalves was found guilty by a jury during a trial held at Norwich Crown Court in March. The court sentenced him to nine years in prison. Judge Andrew Shaw delivered the sentence and made a pointed statement emphasizing that women are not property to be used for satisfying sexual urges. He underscored that the victim was entitled to feel safe within her own home but was instead awakened from her sleep and left defenseless during the attack. The judge described Goncalves as a remorseless and dangerous offender who inflicted significant emotional distress on the victim.

Detective Constable Daniel Wilson expressed his appreciation for the victim’s strength and resilience throughout the ordeal. He also urged others who have experienced similar crimes to come forward and report sexual assaults to the police, emphasizing the importance of justice and support for victims. The case highlights the ongoing need for vigilance and the importance of trusting victims to seek help and justice in the face of such traumatic experiences.
