ERICA TAVARES STRUDD DOG ATTACK SHOCK: HORRIFIC KNIFE ASSAULT ON FAMILY PET IN CONSTANCE CLOSE

In a disturbing incident that has shocked the community of Stroud, Erica Marisa Tavares, born on August 8, 2000, and residing at Constance Close, Dudbridge Road, was convicted in 2023 for launching a brutal and frenzied attack on her family’s dog, Thanos, following a dispute related to the pet's escape. The attack, characterized by its ferocity and violence, resulted in severe injuries to the American bulldog, including four wounds to the head and a fatal injury to the abdomen, leaving the animal to suffer immensely before succumbing to its injuries.

According to court reports, the incident unfolded on the afternoon of February 11, 2023, shortly after Gerson Barros, Tavares’s partner, returned home to Stroud. Upon his arrival, he was informed that Thanos had been roaming the streets earlier that morning. The local veterinary clinic had taken in the dog and contacted the police, who later arranged for the pet’s return to its owners. This sequence of events ignited a heated argument between Tavares and Barros, during which accusations flew back and forth. Tavares reportedly suggested that Barros leave their shared residence and end their relationship, escalating tensions further.

During the confrontation, Tavares, in a state of apparent rage, began stabbing Thanos with a 12-inch (5.08cm) knife. Witnesses reported that she repeatedly inflicted injuries on the dog’s head and abdomen. At one point, she allegedly pointed the weapon at Barros, threatening to kill him, which added a dangerous dimension to the altercation. The police were called, and Tavares was promptly arrested. The injured dog was taken to the veterinary clinic for emergency treatment, but despite efforts, Thanos succumbed to his injuries.

In her defense, Erica Tavares’s legal representative, Matt Harbinson, argued that her actions were driven by a history of domestic abuse and controlling behavior from Barros. He also highlighted her struggles with post-natal depression following the birth of her third child. Harbinson described the incident as a complete breakdown, emphasizing that Tavares was juggling multiple stressors at the time—studying for a business degree, working part-time, caring for three children, and enduring ongoing abuse. He suggested that the incident was an extreme reaction to the immense pressure she was under.

Judge Ian Lawrie KC addressed the court, condemning the suffering inflicted upon Thanos as “unforgivable.” However, he acknowledged that Tavares’s conduct appeared to be “completely out of character.” As part of her sentence, she received a 12-month jail term, suspended for 18 months, along with 60 hours of unpaid community service. Additionally, she was ordered to undergo 12 months of mental health treatment and was banned from owning protected animals for five years, with the restriction set to expire in December 2028.

Following her conviction, a neighbor from Constance Close took to Facebook to voice their perspective, claiming that the media had misrepresented the situation. The neighbor alleged that Tavares had kicked the dog out into the street the night before and denied any domestic violence, asserting that her partner was actually trying to protect the children and was not abusive. The neighbor also claimed that Tavares’s mental health issues and her intimidating behavior had caused tension within the close-knit community. They expressed concern over her constant photographing of neighbors and children, and stated that no residents wished for her to remain in the neighborhood, despite her being under police protection. The community remains divided over the incident, but the court’s verdict underscores the severity of the crime committed against Thanos, a beloved family pet in Stroud.
