Eric Janicki

Cockermouth Keswick Sexual Abuser

Febuary 2006 PAEDOPHILE JAILED FOR JUST 40 MONTHS A PAEDOPHILE who subjected two teenage boys to five years of sexual abuse has been jailed for more than three years. Eric Mark Janicki, 42, plied the two Keswick schoolboys with alcohol and paid them after they performed sex acts and watched pornographic videos with him. The traumatic abuse – which only came to light last October, nine years after it last happened, when the younger boy told the older one what happened to him – led both boys into a spiral of depression and drug abuse. One even attempted suicide. Sentencing him at Carlisle Crown Court today Judge Paul Batty QC said: “It is perfectly plain to me that you debauched and corrupted these two young boys.” Janicki, of Gote Road, Cockermouth, pleaded guilty to nine charges of indecent assault on a male under 16, seven of gross indecency and had 12 other indecent assaults taken into account. All of the offences were committed in Keswick between 1991 and 1996. The court heard he befriended the pair at separate times, encouraging both to call him “Uncle Eric”. He first became friends with the older boy, taking him and other friends to the cinema, bowling and other attractions. That developed and he started letting the boy drink in his flat before putting on pornographic videos, which they watched together. Janicki then began performing sex acts in front of his victim and encouraged the boy to join in with him. He would pay him after they did this. After falling out with the older boy, he befriended the younger one and their relationship developed in a similar way. He too was paid, sometimes as much as £20. In mitigation, the court heard that no threats or force was ever used to make the boys take part in the sex acts. Andrew Carney, defending, said Janicki felt “deep sorrow” for what he had done, adding: “He fully accepts that what he did to these boys should not have happened. “It can be seen in no other light than being a gross breach of trust. He was weak and realises he must now pay for what he did.” As well as imposing a 40-month jail term, Judge Batty ordered that Janicki be put on the sex offenders’ register for life and banned him from working with children.
