Emily ‘Elliot’ Sweetland, 21, appeared at Canterbury Crown Court today (June 21) to be sentenced. Sweetland was sentenced for 12 counts of sexual assault – one on a girl under 13 – for which she received a string of concurrent sentences. She was jailed for three years, will remain on the sex offenders register indefinitely and a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) has been put in place. The former Greggs worker had previously admitted the sex attack spree which saw him publicly assault six young girls and three women. Sweetland, referred to in court as “he”, began his sex spree in Thanet on April 3, where he touched two teenage girls sexually without their consent. In the other incidents, which took place across four days, Sweetland assaulted schoolgirls in Canterbury and Ramsgate. Francesca Levett, Prosecuting, read a series of victim impact statements to the court. One victim, who was with a friend in Canterbury, on April 5, said Sweetland passed them and started staring at the her. Mrs Levett read: “They felt uncomfortable and walked away. As they walked faster so did the defendant. “The defendant came up behind the victim and slapped her bottom and asked for her number and got in her face, repeatedly asking for her number. “The defendant then bombarded her with messages and they eventually met up. “When they did the defendant persisted in following her, touching her face and bottom. “The defendant was told to leave her alone when in the presence of others but pursued her everywhere she went. “The defendant was aware of the upset caused but still persisted in following her. “In the victim statement she says she is undergoing counselling and takes a different route to school. “She still can’t believe what happened and feels scared and intimidated.” Female sex offender taunted her victims’ families in court A woman who targeted schoolgirls in a series of sex attacks has taunted her victims’ families in court as her sentencing was delayed to later this week. Remorseless Emily Sweetland, 21, subjected eight girls and three women to sexual assaults in public places, including at Canterbury West railway station and the city centre’s Starbucks shop. But as she appeared in the dock for sentencing at Canterbury Crown Court, she smirked and laughed as she heard one of her victims now wets the bed and others are receiving therapy. The former Greggs worker – who prefers to be called Elliot – even screamed at the mother of one victim: “You wait until I’m out! Just wait until I’m out!” Judge Mark Weekes threatened Sweetland with contempt of court before ordering her down to the cells during the hearing on Friday. He then apologised for having to delay sentencing because police had failed to obtain impact statements from victims. Addressing them and their families, he said: “I think the police officer in the case owes you an apology. “I would like to offer you a huge apology from the court for wasting your time and your emotions.” Sweetland, of Warten Road in Ramsgate, has admitted carrying out 11 sex attacks in the space of four days across Canterbury and Thanet. She approached one of her victims – a 13-year-old girl – in Starbucks in Rose Lane and put her hand up her skirt. The terrified victim said: “She came and sat down near our table and pulled up a chair. “We thought she was a man, and we felt uncomfortable so got up to leave. As I stood up she put her hand up my skirt. I just screamed and we ran off.” The first of the attacks happened in Minster, Thanet, on April 3, when two teenage girls were touched sexually without their consent. Two days later, in Canterbury, five girls aged between 12 and 15, and a woman, were attacked by Sweetland. Sweetland was arrested on the evening of Saturday, April 6, following sexual assaults in Ramsgate on three more victims – two women and a 13-year-old girl. Sentencing is now due to take place on Thursday. Emily Sweetland, 21, admitted a string of sex attacks on girls and women during a four-day rampage. The baker from Ramsgate, Kent accosted her victims in public locations, including a Starbucks in Canterbury, Kent. Greggs worker Sweetland approached one 13-year-old in the coffee shop and put her hand up her skirt. The victim said: ‘She came and sat down near our table and pulled up a chair. ‘We thought she was a man, and we felt uncomfortable so got up to leave. ‘As I stood up she put her hand up my skirt and grabbed me. ‘I just screamed and we ran off.’ The victim went to the city’s bus station but was followed by Sweetland. The victim’s mother told how the attack has left her daughter struggling to sleep and terrified of new people coming near her. She said: ‘It has really taken its toll on her. ‘We can’t go where there are strangers around because she’s worried it will happen again. ‘She’s even said she doesn’t want to go back to school because she’s so scared. ‘It was meant to be a fun Easter holidays but she spent the whole time in tears. ‘She’s gone from being a happy child who loves being with her friends to someone who doesn’t want to go out because she feels so unsafe. ‘It’s devastated us as a family. I just want my happy little girl back.’ Appearing via video link from HMP Bronzefield, Sweetland, dressed in a white Nike t-shirt, admitted 11 sexual assaults charge but denied a count of witness intimidation. Canterbury Crown Court heard the attacks took place from April 3 until she was arrested on April 6. He said: ‘You are now subject to the Sex Offenders’ Register. ‘You must notify the police of your address and other details. ‘I should warn you that the offences are clearly serious both individually and collectively.’ Judge Weekes told Sweetland yesterday even though a pre-sentence report has been ordered for five weeks’ time a prison sentence is likely when she is sentenced in five weeks. Sweetland was remanded in custody at the same prison until sentencing.
