John Ivatt, from Ramsgate, was sentenced to 18 months at Canterbury Crown Court for downloading numerous indecent images of children and grooming a 14-year-old girl online. The 31-year-old, previously of Southwood Road, Ramsgate, admitted three counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity; one of causing a child to watch a sexual act; six of taking indecent images of a child from levels one to five; and four of possession of indecent images. Two counts of making indecent images were asked to lie on file. The court heard Ivatt contacted the teenager via a dating website and persuaded her to commit sexual acts for him on webcam, while he took pictures of her. He also downloaded hundreds of indecent images and videos of children. This depraved collection was found by police officers on his computers after they carried out a warrant at his home on July 19, 2011, they said. After the hearing, Det Sgt David Shipley, said: “At all stages of this investigation, Ivatt sought to blame others, including the victim in this case, only finally accepting responsibility at the last moment. “As someone with previous experience and training of child protection, he more than most, must be aware of the damage his behaviour causes. “I am pleased that he has been brought to justice and that Kent Police Child Exploitation Investigation Team continue to identify and protect children at risk of harm.” Ivatt was sentenced to 16 months for causing a child to engage in sexual activity and two months consecutively for the indecent image offences. He was also made the subject of a 10-year sexual offences prevention order, which will control his access to the internet and children in the future.
