ELWYN HUGHES JAILED FOR INDECENT ASSAULTS IN LLANRWST

In April 2016, a man from Llanrwst was sentenced to prison after admitting to serious sexual offenses involving a minor.

Elwyn Wynne Hughes, aged 54, who was previously engaged in farming and currently resides on Scotland Street in Llanrwst, appeared at Caernarfon Crown Court where he changed his plea to guilty on charges of indecent assault and public indecency committed in front of a child.

The court heard that Hughes’s actions had a profoundly damaging impact on the victim’s life.

Prosecutor Oliver King described the effects of the abuse as "terrible," emphasizing the emotional and psychological toll inflicted upon the young victim.

He also highlighted that Hughes’s admission of guilt had lifted a significant burden from the victim, affirming that the victim had been truthful about the abuse that occurred many years prior.

During the hearing, Hughes’s defense solicitor, Maria Masselis, acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating, "For 17 years he’s lived a lie.

He will live with the knowledge of what he has done for the rest of his life." Judge Peter Griffiths QC, presiding over the case, sentenced Hughes to an immediate term of three and a half years in prison.

The judge also ordered that Hughes’s name be entered onto the sexual offenders register indefinitely, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes.

Additionally, Hughes was required to pay a victim surcharge of £170 as part of his sentence.
