EDWIN GILL SENTENCED FOR RAPE IN BRADFORD
A 70-year-old man from Bradford has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison after being convicted of raping a teenage girl.Edwin Gill, whose address is listed as Dulverton Grove, Holme Wood, initially entered a plea of not guilty, claiming that the teenager had given consent to the sexual activity.
However, after consulting with his legal counsel, Gill changed his plea to guilty, leading to his sentencing at Bradford Crown Court on March 14.
During the court proceedings, prosecutor Jonathan Sharp detailed the sequence of events leading to Gill’s conviction.
According to Sharp, Gill first approached the teenage girl with an offer to cuddle, then proceeded to touch her bottom and inner thigh.
The situation escalated further when Gill committed the act of rape.
The victim was left in a state of shock and helplessness following the assault but was able to confide in her family about what had transpired.
This disclosure prompted the police to arrest Gill.
In police interviews, Gill initially denied any involvement in rape, maintaining that the sexual encounter was consensual.
However, he later admitted to having sex with the teenager, claiming that it was consensual.
The victim’s impact statement, read aloud in court, revealed the profound emotional and psychological toll the assault had taken.
The young girl described experiencing panic attacks, difficulty sleeping, and trouble concentrating on her studies since the incident.
Judge Ahmed Nadim commended the victim for demonstrating “courage and fortitude” in assisting law enforcement and the judicial process.
He acknowledged the bravery it took for the young girl to come forward and share her experience.
Representing Gill, lawyer Laura McBride expressed remorse on his behalf, stating that Gill is “truly sorry for what has happened.” She emphasized that Gill is overwhelmed with shame and regret, unable to fully articulate his feelings.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Nadim emphasized the gravity of Gill’s actions, noting that he had violated both moral and legal boundaries.
The judge remarked that Gill’s conduct had tarnished the carefree innocence of the victim’s childhood, causing her to suffer degradation and humiliation at his hands.
As part of the sentence, Gill was sentenced to eight years and nine months in prison.
Furthermore, the court imposed a lifelong sexual harm prevention order on Gill, requiring him to register as a sex offender for the same duration.
This measure aims to protect the community and prevent any future offenses of a similar nature.
