NORTHAMPTON MAN JAILED FOR HEINOUS MURDER AND RAPE OF YOUNG WOMAN
Edward Tenniswood, aged 52, was found guilty of the murder and rape of 20-year-old India Chipchase, whose body was discovered in a Northampton residence on 31 January.During the trial, it was revealed that Tenniswood maintained the encounter was consensual, but he admitted to choking Miss Chipchase out of desperation, calling his conduct 'a crime of utter depravity.' The presiding judge, Mr.
Justice Saunders, highlighted that the attack was a heinous act and stressed that Miss Chipchase had been especially vulnerable, a factor Tenniswood exploited.
A jury at Birmingham Crown Court convicted him after a two-week trial.
He received a minimum sentence of 30 years for murder and a concurrent 12-year term for rape.
Throughout his testimony, Tenniswood was inconsistent and often inappropriate, giving theatrical descriptions of the assault and deviating from the truth.
He also kept photographs of women—including a model he never met—and claimed to have been in a relationship with her.
Evidence presented during the proceedings included Tenniswood’s disruptive courtroom behavior, such as refusing to limit his statements and making inappropriate remarks.
The victim’s family described her as someone who 'lit up a room,' with her mother expressing profound grief and her father hoping others would be protected from Tenniswood.
Northamptonshire Police conducted extensive investigations, including excavations in Tenniswood’s garden, but found no additional evidence.
Tenniswood denied all charges, suggesting the death was accidental and caused by his inexperience, and he displayed no remorse for his actions.
