EDWARD MORDAUNT AND SEXUAL OFFENCES IN LEEDS

The case involving Edward Mordaunt, a 44-year-old chartered surveyor from Beeston, Leeds, has drawn significant attention following his conviction for serious misconduct related to online communications with a minor.

Mordaunt, who is the brother of Conservative MP Penny Mordaunt, engaged in inappropriate and illegal exchanges with what he believed to be a 14-year-old girl on social media platforms, ultimately leading to a court sentencing.

The incident came to light when Mordaunt initiated contact with a decoy account managed by police officers, posing as a young girl named Elle.

The police had set up the decoy on the messaging app KIK, as part of an operation to catch sex offenders attempting to contact minors.

The court was informed that on the 4th of May this year, Mordaunt privately messaged Elle after initially being part of a group chat titled 'A-Levels in Leeds,' which included her.

Prior to this, Mordaunt had also engaged with another decoy portraying a 12-year-old girl, whom he told she was 'gorgeous.' During the court proceedings at Leeds Crown Court, prosecutor Katherine Robinson detailed the extent of Mordaunt’s communications with the decoy.

She explained that the fake account presented an image of a girl dressed in a white shirt and dark tie, claiming to be 14 years old.

Mordaunt, however, identified himself as an adult male and engaged in increasingly inappropriate conversations.

The court was told that the suspect messaged Elle directly following the initial group interactions and that the police officers behind the decoy account accepted his chat requests.

The communications became increasingly sexual in nature.

Mordaunt asked the decoy if she had ever engaged in full sexual activity with someone and sent explicit images involving a man's penis.

Furthermore, he made comments indicating awareness that such communications were wrong, stating that he shouldn’t be speaking to someone her age, and even discussed the possibility of setting up a 'sugar baby' fund for her and arranging to meet in person.

Although plans were made to meet, they were ultimately cancelled, but there was talk of him visiting her in Sunderland.

Throughout the exchanges, Mordaunt used nicknames such as 'Teddy Eddie' and spoke about himself as being 'like a bear' and 'sexy.' He also told the decoy she was 'sexy,' further indicating the sexual nature of his intentions.

After the 27th of May, communication ceased, and police arrested Mordaunt.

He was detained, interviewed, and held in custody for approximately 26 hours before appearing before the magistrates.

During the sentencing hearing, mitigation was presented by Catherine Silverton, who emphasized Mordaunt’s attempts to seek help following his guilty plea to charges of attempting to engage a child in sexual communication.

She highlighted that Mordaunt had no prior criminal convictions and expressed remorse for his actions.

The court was informed that he had arranged to see a doctor for mental health issues, was on a waiting list, and had conducted research into psychiatric help options.

Other character references were submitted, including testimony from his wife, brother, and former employer, noting his generally good character and his care responsibilities towards his elderly father and stepmother.

The judge, Judge Guy Kearl QC, acknowledged Mordaunt’s cooperation after his arrest but emphasized that his use of chat rooms was a misguided attempt to escape reality.

He made it clear that such a justification does not mitigate the seriousness of his offences.

As a result, Mordaunt was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for two years.

The court also ordered him to complete 150 hours of unpaid work, participate in 15 rehabilitation programs, and adhere to a seven-year sexual harm prevention order.

The judge warned Mordaunt that any breach of these conditions would result in immediate imprisonment, underscoring the gravity of his actions and the importance of safeguarding minors from online exploitation.
