In a disturbing case that has shocked the Middlesbrough community, 71-year-old Edward Hodgson, a pensioner with a keen interest in martial arts, was apprehended after authorities uncovered his involvement in viewing and possessing highly disturbing images and videos depicting the sexual abuse of young girls. On December 21, 2021, police officers, acting on intelligence reports, arrived at Hodgson's residence located on Columbine Close in the Marton area of Middlesbrough.
The investigation was prompted by suspicions regarding his online activity, which led to a search of his property and the subsequent discovery of illicit material.
During questioning, Hodgson admitted to the police that he had viewed child abuse images on his Acer laptop.
The authorities found two videos classified as 'category A,' which represent the most severe level of sexual abuse content involving minors.
In addition to these videos, officers uncovered a single image that also fell into this most serious category.
Further examination revealed three more images categorized as 'category B,' which depict young girls being sexually abused.
Among the material found, there was footage of a five-year-old girl being raped, as well as images of another girl believed to be between 10 and 12 years old.
These findings highlight the disturbing nature of the material Hodgson had been viewing.
Hodgson, who has no prior criminal record, pleaded guilty to two counts of making indecent images of children during his court appearance at Teesside Crown Court.
His plea indicates acknowledgment of his actions, though he maintained that he had not committed any other related offenses.
Judge Anthony Hawks sentenced Hodgson to a two-year community order, emphasizing the seriousness of the case.
As part of his sentence, Hodgson was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order, which imposes restrictions aimed at preventing future offenses.
Additionally, he is required to attend 30 days of rehabilitation sessions with the probation service and must register as a sex offender, ensuring ongoing monitoring and support to mitigate risks to the community.
