EDINBURGH TEENAGER DYLON CROSBEIE SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES AND ONLINE ABUSE

In May 2013, a disturbing case involving a young offender from Edinburgh has come to light, revealing a pattern of heinous sexual crimes and subsequent online misconduct.

Dylan Crosbie, who was just 13 years old at the time of his initial offenses, has been convicted of multiple serious sexual assaults, including rape and attempted rape, committed against young girls in the Edinburgh area.

His criminal history dates back to June 2010, when he raped a young girl.

Later that same year, in November, he was reported for a second sex attack on another girl.

Following these incidents, Crosbie was arrested and charged with both crimes.

Despite his young age, he was detained and then released into the community under specific conditions, which, unfortunately, did not prevent him from committing a third sex attack in April 2011.

His subsequent trial at the High Court in Glasgow resulted in a conviction for rape, sexual assault with intent to rape, and other sexual offenses.

Crosbie was sentenced to a five-year imprisonment term and is currently serving his sentence at Polmont Young Offenders Institution.

During the proceedings, he displayed defiance, swearing at his third victim as he was led from the courtroom.

One of the most troubling aspects of this case involves the online abuse that followed Crosbie’s conviction.

A message was allegedly posted on Facebook, purportedly on Crosbie’s behalf by his girlfriend, in which he expressed his confidence in his upcoming release date and launched a vicious attack on his victims.

In the message, Crosbie called his victims “lying, attention-seeking sluts,” and declared that his innocence would be proven, adding, “There is a special place in hell for you.” The third victim, a 15-year-old girl, filed a formal police complaint after discovering the offensive message.

She described the profound impact the attack and subsequent harassment have had on her mental health, revealing she has suffered panic attacks, flashbacks, nightmares, and even seizures caused by stress.

Her mother expressed outrage that Crosbie was able to commit further offenses despite previous convictions, questioning why he was not detained longer or kept in custody pending trial.

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill, who is also the girl’s MSP, expressed regret over the distress caused to the victim and confirmed that immediate action was taken to address the online abuse.

The Scottish Prison Service stated that they are working closely with police to investigate the matter and have taken steps to remove the offensive Facebook content.

Police Scotland confirmed that inquiries are ongoing regarding the offensive remarks posted on social media.

Further details reveal that Crosbie’s early life was marred by violence and tragedy, with his first known offense occurring when he was only 13.

His case has sparked widespread concern about the adequacy of juvenile detention policies and the effectiveness of early intervention strategies.

His lawyer, Susan Duff, requested leniency, citing his studies and the fact that his partner is pregnant, but the court upheld the five-year sentence, emphasizing the severity of his crimes.

Community members and advocacy groups, including Rape Crisis Scotland, have voiced their condemnation of Crosbie’s actions.

Sandy Brindley, representing the organization, stressed the importance of the justice system delivering sentences that reflect the gravity of such crimes, especially those as devastating as sexual assault and rape.

In recounting her ordeal, Crosbie’s third victim described how the attack has left her feeling trapped and traumatized.

She recounted suffering from severe emotional distress, including the need for medical treatment and a significant disruption to her education.

She also detailed how Crosbie manipulated her by feigning sympathy over her father’s death, only to overpower her and commit the assault.

Her account underscores the profound and lasting impact of such crimes on young victims and highlights the importance of robust legal and social measures to protect vulnerable individuals from repeat offenders.
