DOUGLAS GAUNT AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY SCANDAL IN MIDDLESBROUGH

A 64-year-old man from Middlesbrough, Douglas Gaunt, who was found to have downloaded numerous images depicting child abuse, has avoided a prison sentence despite being convicted on multiple charges.

Gaunt maintains his innocence in the face of a unanimous jury verdict that found him guilty of 16 charges related to child pornography.

Last month, at Teesside Crown Court, Gaunt was convicted of creating 59 indecent images of children.

These images were obtained by downloading them from the internet.

In cases involving child abuse imagery, courts often handle a large volume of content—sometimes numbering hundreds or thousands of images—making these 59 pictures comparatively fewer.

Nevertheless, the court considered the act serious enough to warrant conviction.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge John Walford addressed the court, stating, "The facts of this case are that we are discussing two specific dates over a span of 21 months ago, and the images in question are a small number, primarily classified at the lowest level of seriousness." As a result, Gaunt was given a community order, a sentence recommended by a probation report and consistent with sentencing guidelines.

This order includes a requirement for two years of supervision, intended to identify and address underlying factors that may have contributed to his behaviour.

The judge also highlighted that Gaunt’s offending was uncharacteristic of his overall behaviour.

Gaunt’s defense lawyer, Paul Cleasby, emphasized that his client continued to deny involvement in any wrongdoing but fulfilled legal obligations related to sex offender registration.

Gaunt will remain on the register for five years.

Cleasby added, "He is not someone who disregards the authority of the court.

He has reached the age of 64 without previous relevant convictions, and his good character was tarnished only by this isolated incident dating back to June 2009.

It was a very brief window of offending." The lawyer also pointed out that Gaunt received strong support from his wife and has not offended since the incident.

He further noted that supervising Gaunt would serve the public interest.

As part of his sentence, Gaunt was also subjected to a sexual offences prevention order, a legal measure aimed at preventing future offending.

He stated that he had no plans to own or use a computer at his home again, reflecting his desire to distance himself from potentially problematic online activity.

Prosecutors depicted Gaunt as someone with a tendency to seek out sexual images of children online.

Evidence revealed that police discovered these images stored under Gaunt’s password-protected profile on the family computer during a search on June 12, 2009.

The investigation uncovered searches related to child pornography and links to approximately 5,000 websites suggesting such material.

In addition, Gaunt’s social media accounts contained references to his interests in sex and young girls, including his name, age, location, and hobbies.

The police raid originated from an inquiry into alleged communications between Gaunt and a convicted sex offender.

During the investigation, police intercepted online chats between Gaunt and an unknown user named gauntdouglas, which was linked to Gaunt’s email address and home address.

These chats included discussions about young prostitutes on Teesside.

Gaunt denied ever accessing, receiving, or saving images of young girls, or visiting chat rooms or social networking sites related to this content.

He claimed ignorance of the images stored on his device, asserting that he did not know how they got there.

Gaunt commented that some of the images could be comparable to worse pictures seen on beaches in Spain.

Despite his claims of innocence, the prosecution presented strong evidence linking Gaunt to the illegal activity, and the court ultimately found him guilty of the offences.

His case highlights ongoing concerns about online child exploitation and the importance of rigorous investigations to combat such crimes.
