DONAT CANTRELL AND SHOCKING CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN LEEDS AND HORSHORTH
Donat Cantrell was recently convicted in a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Leeds.The 57-year-old man was found guilty following a trial at Leeds Crown Court of a series of disturbing criminal offenses involving a young girl, who was only around 10 or 11 years old at the time of the incidents.
Cantrell’s legal troubles are not new; he is currently serving a significant prison sentence after an armed stand-off with police officers in Horsforth in March of the previous year.
However, this recent conviction has resulted in the judge sentencing him to an additional nine years in prison, a sentence that will only commence after the completion of his existing 10-year-and-eight-month sentence.
The court proceedings detailed a disturbing pattern of grooming and sexual abuse carried out by Cantrell against the young girl.
It was revealed during the trial that he had systematically manipulated and exploited the child, showering her with gifts such as clothing, including a bikini, to gain her trust.
The evidence presented indicated that on one occasion, Cantrell lured the girl into his motorhome alone, closed the curtains, and proceeded to undress himself in front of her.
He claimed he needed to wash himself and asked for her help, then coercively encouraged her to remove her clothing as well.
What followed was a series of sexual acts in which Cantrell touched her body, including her genital area.
He then engaged in masturbation in her presence and instructed her to touch him, ultimately performing a sexual act on her.
His sinister justification to the girl was that she should not tell her mother, and he falsely claimed to her that he was “like a grandad”.
In another alarming incident, Cantrell took the girl into a bathroom and coerced her into masturbating him in exchange for a sum of £20.
The following day, he took her to a B&M store and gave her the cash, telling her that she had “earned it.” The court also learned that he showed her a pornographic video, further exposing her to inappropriate material.
The conviction includes multiple charges: engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child, sexual assault of a child, causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, assault of a child by penetration, sexual assault of a child, and causing a child to watch a sexual act.
The details of Cantrell's actions paint a horrifying picture of calculated exploitation and abuse.
During mitigation, Rebecca Young argued that Cantrell’s issues with alcohol and drugs contributed to his behaviors, though she admitted that such circumstances did not justify his actions but might help explain them.
Her arguments were met with firm rebuke from Judge Tom Bayliss KC, who emphasized the gravity of the crimes and his inability to accept such reasoning.
The judge told Cantrell that he had been in a position of trust and accused him of trying to corrupt the young girl with gifts and money in a calculated effort to commit sexual abuse.
Judge Bayliss described the crimes as some of the most cynical and premeditated abuse he had encountered in his career.
