HORSHAM AND WARNHAM PENSIONER DONALD SMALLWOOD JAILED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the local communities of Horsham and Warnham, Donald Smallwood, a 77-year-old resident of Wyvern Place in Warnham, has been sentenced to a year in prison after admitting to the possession of child pornography. The court proceedings revealed that Smallwood had downloaded explicit images depicting minors, a crime that underscores the ongoing issues surrounding online exploitation and the dangers lurking in seemingly anonymous digital spaces.

Smallwood faced a charge specifically related to possessing pornographic images involving children. During the hearing at Lewes Crown Court, he pleaded guilty to this count. However, two additional charges concerning the possession of extreme pornographic images remain on file, indicating that authorities found evidence of even more disturbing material linked to his activities.

Detective Inspector Ali Eaton, speaking about the case, emphasized the gravity of such offenses. She stated, “For every indecent image of a child online, there is a victim. In downloading these images, including at the highest level of indecency, Smallwood has actively played a part in perpetuating the abuse and exploitation of children.” She further warned that the internet is not a space of complete anonymity, and that law enforcement agencies have the capability to trace illegal downloads back to individuals. “The internet is not a space of anonymity. If you choose to download a child abuse image, it could be traced back to you by police, as it was with Smallwood,” she added.

Following his conviction, Smallwood was sentenced at Lewes Crown Court. In addition to his prison term, he was subjected to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which will remain in effect indefinitely. Furthermore, he will be registered on the Sex Offenders’ Register for a period of ten months, marking a significant legal consequence aimed at monitoring and preventing further offenses.
