DEREK MARSH SENTENCED IN RECULVER FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRLS NEAR HERNE BAY
In a case that has shocked the local community, 71-year-old Derek Marsh from Watersway Park, Reculver, near Herne Bay, was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple charges of sexual misconduct involving two young girls. The sentencing took place at Canterbury Crown Court, where Judge James O’Mahony emphasized the serious nature of Marsh’s offenses.Marsh was found guilty of three counts of indecent assault and one charge of causing a child to engage in sexual activity. The disturbing details of the case only came to light after one of the victims confided in a teacher, prompting an immediate police investigation. During questioning, Marsh did not deny his actions; instead, he expressed feelings of sickness and shame, acknowledging his wrongdoing.
The court heard that Marsh’s behavior posed a significant risk to children, although Judge O’Mahony clarified that Marsh was not considered dangerous in the statutory sense. Nonetheless, the judge made it clear that the risk he presented was serious enough to warrant strict measures. As part of his sentence, Marsh will be subject to an eight-year sexual offences prevention order, will remain on the sex offenders’ register, and is permanently banned from working with children.
In mitigation, Paul Hogben, Marsh’s defense lawyer, highlighted that his client had demonstrated a willingness and capacity to engage in counseling and expressed deep remorse for his actions. The judge accepted this remorse as genuine. Additionally, the court ordered that 140 days Marsh had spent in remand should be deducted from his overall sentence, reducing the time he will serve behind bars.
This case underscores the ongoing concerns about safeguarding children and the importance of vigilance in the community surrounding Herne Bay and Reculver, where residents are now grappling with the implications of this disturbing crime.
