DEREK DREDGE FROM ASHFORD JAILED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGE OFFENSES IN ISLEWORTH

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community, Derek Dredge, a 49-year-old paramedic from Ashford, was sentenced to eight months in prison last Friday after being found guilty of possessing and creating indecent images of children. The case was brought to light through a police operation known as Operation Inkerman, which utilized credit card records to trace the purchase and download of illicit material.

Authorities uncovered that Dredge, who shared his home with his wife and teenage daughter, had been engaging in the viewing and downloading of child abuse images during his personal time. The police investigation revealed that two hard drives seized from his residence contained a significant number of such images, including 441 indecent photographs of children. These materials were stored on computers located within his home in Feltham Hill Road, Ashford.

During the court proceedings at Isleworth Crown Court, Judge Jonathan Lowen addressed Dredge directly, emphasizing the gravity of his actions. He stated, “These are serious offences because the purchase of such material fuels an industry based on the abuse of children. The degradation of the children which you saw abused must have been apparent to you because of your training and calling as a paramedic.”

Although only a small portion of the images fell into the most explicit and severe categories, the judge pointed out that even those in less serious classifications involved children in poses that were highly objectionable. The images, which were linked to websites with titles such as Lolita, Pre-teens, and Girls 10-15, depicted children in compromising and abusive situations, further highlighting the disturbing nature of the case.

Dredge’s connection to the community was notable, as he was employed at the Isleworth ambulance station until his arrest in December 2003. The police investigation involved reconstructing the websites he visited, which contained paedophile material, and confirmed his active engagement with such content. Prosecutor Rosemary Burns detailed that the investigation was lengthy and delayed, but ultimately led to Dredge’s admission in January of this year that he had viewed the sites and downloaded the images.

Defense lawyer Stephen Bevan argued that Dredge had not shared or distributed the images, but had merely clicked on them to view. Despite this, the court imposed strict conditions upon his release. Dredge will remain on license for an extended period of one year, be required to register as a sex offender, and is prohibited from having contact with children or using computers for the next five years. The case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat the distribution and possession of child abuse images, and the serious consequences faced by those involved.
