RICHARD WINTER FROM ASHFORD SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AND INDECENT ASSAULT IN GUILDFORD
In a significant case that has shocked the local community, Richard Winter, a resident of Ashford, was sentenced to two years in prison at Guildford Crown Court on Monday. The conviction followed his admission to a series of serious crimes involving the exploitation and abuse of young girls.Winter, aged 52, faced a total of 38 counts of taking indecent photographs of children, alongside 16 counts of indecent assault on a 13-year-old girl. The charges stemmed from an incident in May of this year, when a mother in Walton-on-Thames observed Winter secretly filming up her daughter’s skirt inside a Woolworths store. The mother’s quick action led to Winter’s arrest, during which authorities discovered a camcorder in his possession, indicating his intent to record such illicit images.
Further investigations revealed a disturbing pattern of behavior. Police raided Winter’s home and uncovered more than 100 videos depicting young girls’ bottoms, some of which contained footage of Winter himself engaging in indecent assault. The police also found a vast collection of over 10,000 indecent images of girls, accumulated over a sickening span of 25 years. This extensive library of child exploitation material highlights the long-term nature of Winter’s offending.
Detective Constable Andy Bilton, who dedicated six months to investigating the case, expressed his condemnation of Winter’s actions. He stated, “This man is now where he deserves to be – behind bars. At first, he used cine-cameras, always cunningly and carefully concealed, before switching to camcorders. At home, he had special film editing equipment. Although Winter targeted strangers, he did revisit some local schools several times.”
The case has also prompted concern among local politicians. Spelthorne MP David Wilshire emphasized the need for stronger measures to combat paedophilia. He remarked, “We must not become complacent. Parents in Spelthorne regularly tell me that they believe that not enough is being done by the government to control convicted paedophiles, to stop them re-offending. I am, therefore, calling for six new measures to address their anxieties.”
Winter’s sentencing underscores the ongoing battle against child exploitation and the importance of vigilance within communities to protect vulnerable young girls from predators like him.
