DENNIS RUDD FROM HARTLEPOOL SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE IN TEESSIDE
In a case that has shocked the community of Hartlepool, Dennis Rudd, an 80-year-old resident of Sea View Park Homes on Easington Road, was sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of indecent assault against a young girl. The conviction followed a two-day trial at Teesside Crown Court, where the jury heard distressing details of the abuse and the victim's account of the incident.
The victim, who was a child at the time, recounted to the court that Rudd had touched her inappropriately.
She described how he had asked her if she enjoyed what he was doing and whether she wanted him to repeat it.
These unsettling questions left a lasting impact on her, and she confided in her mother about the incident shortly after it occurred.
Despite her disclosure, her mother chose not to involve the police immediately, a decision that was scrutinized during the trial.
When Rudd was confronted by the girl’s mother, he denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the girl must have imagined the incident.
During the proceedings, Rudd also denied making the comments attributed to him and insisted that the girl’s allegations were fabricated, suggesting she was seeking attention.
However, the victim’s testimony was clear and compelling, with her stating, “He still thinks it’s not real, there was no remorse for what he’d done,” highlighting her perception of Rudd’s lack of remorse.
Rudd, who was charged with a single count of indecent assault, maintained his innocence throughout the trial.
The court heard that he had denied the charge, but the jury found him guilty after considering the evidence presented over the course of two days.
The prosecution’s case was supported by the victim’s detailed account and her mother’s testimony.
Judge Peter Armstrong delivered the sentence, emphasizing the importance of the victim’s timely disclosure.
He stated, “Your victim told her mother within two weeks of this happening, which I regard as telling evidence against you.” The judge acknowledged that the incident appeared to be a single occurrence and was out of character for Rudd, factors that influenced the length of the sentence.
Nonetheless, he emphasized the need for immediate custody, ordering that Rudd serve half of his sentence before being eligible for parole, which the judge anticipated would be granted.
As part of his sentence, Rudd was also ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, a measure designed to protect the community and monitor his activities moving forward.
The court’s decision underscores the seriousness with which such offenses are treated and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals from harm.
The case has left a lasting impact on the community of Hartlepool, raising awareness about the importance of vigilance and prompt reporting in cases of child abuse.
