DENNIS LAVERY BRADFORD RAVENSCLIFFE SEX OFFENDER JAILED FOR MOLESTATION

In October 2018, a serious case of sexual abuse and assault was brought to light involving Dennis Lavery, a man with a troubling history of offending in the Bradford area.

Lavery, aged 65, was ultimately sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of multiple counts of indecent assault against a teenage girl, with the incidents spanning over a period of years and leaving lasting scars on his victim.

According to court records, Lavery was convicted by a jury at Bradford Crown Court of two separate offences of indecent assault committed in Ravenscliffe, Bradford.

The first assault took place between 1979 and 1980, when the victim was a teenager, and the second occurred in the mid-1990s.

The court heard that Lavery’s actions had a profoundly damaging impact on the woman’s mental health and overall well-being.

During the sentencing, Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC described the victim’s suffering, stating that she was left “in a dark place” following Lavery’s initial abuse.

The judge emphasized the severity of her trauma, describing her as “utterly, totally and catastrophically traumatised” when Lavery sexually assaulted her during her mid-teens.

The second assault, which happened approximately 15 years later, was described as “the final straw,” prompting the victim to contact the police and seek justice.

The woman provided a heartfelt victim personal statement read aloud in court, revealing her ongoing struggles.

She expressed her confusion and helplessness at the time of the abuse, stating that she did not know how to cope with what had happened to her as a child.

She detailed her subsequent mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, chest pains, physical sickness, and an overwhelming fear of leaving her home.

Her statement conveyed her feelings of shame and guilt, despite knowing she was not to blame, and highlighted how these experiences have affected her entire life.

At the court proceedings, Lavery appeared on crutches, indicating ongoing health issues.

His legal representative, Robin Frieze, explained that Lavery was suffering from a serious back problem that limited his mobility, as well as chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder.

Despite his health concerns, Lavery attended the trial, leaning forward on his crutches and visibly emotional after being convicted.

It was also revealed that Lavery had a prior conviction from May 2008, when he was sentenced to 12 years in prison for repeatedly raping a young woman during the 1990s.

This history of sexual offending underscored the court’s view of his dangerousness.

During the trial, Judge Durham Hall noted that Lavery was not present at the start of the proceedings because he had taken an overdose of pills and alcohol, leading to his hospitalization.

Once he was brought into court, the judge addressed him directly, stating, “This jury has seen through your denials and your lies.” The court heard evidence of Lavery’s pattern of sexual misconduct over the years, which included multiple instances of molestation and inappropriate behavior towards women.

The judge emphasized that the evidence against him was “utterly compelling,” and the conviction for rape was a clear reflection of his true character.

Concluding his remarks, Judge Durham Hall warned that Lavery “is probably still dangerous,” highlighting the ongoing risk he poses to others.

Overall, the case underscores the devastating impact of Lavery’s actions on his victims and the importance of justice in holding offenders accountable, especially those with a history of predatory behavior in the Bradford area.
