DENNIS COCKING LEEDS PAEDOPHILE SENTENCED TO FIVE YEARS IN PRISON FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
In a disturbing case that highlights ongoing concerns about sexual offenses against minors, Dennis Cocking, a 72-year-old resident of Leeds, has been sentenced to five years in prison after admitting to the possession and distribution of indecent images of children. The conviction follows a detailed investigation by police that uncovered a significant collection of illicit material stored on devices found at his home in Thornhill Court, Thornhill Road, Upper Wortley.
Leeds Crown Court was informed that authorities executed a search warrant at Cocking’s residence on June 22 of the previous year.
During the search, law enforcement officials discovered a mobile phone, multiple SIM cards, and various data storage devices.
These contained a total of 496 indecent images and videos depicting minors, with the most serious category, Category A, including 116 images and videos.
Additionally, there were 122 images and videos classified as Category B, and 258 as Category C, indicating a range of severity in the material found.
Cocking, who has a long history of sexual offenses, pleaded guilty to possessing and distributing these indecent images, as well as breaching a sexual offences prevention order previously imposed on him.
The court heard that Cocking’s criminal record is extensive, with convictions dating back to the late 20th century.
In 1988, he was sentenced to eight years in prison for sex offenses committed against a boy under 14.
Later, in 1995, he received a six-year sentence for indecent assault on a boy under 16.
His criminal history also includes a 16-month sentence handed down in November 2012 after he was found in possession of indecent images.
During the sentencing, Judge Geoffrey Marson QC expressed a somber view of Cocking’s ongoing criminal behavior.
He stated, “It is a sad fact that when you are at liberty you will continue to offend,” emphasizing the persistent nature of Cocking’s offending despite previous convictions and restrictions.
Adding to the gravity of his criminal record, Cocking was also involved in a separate incident in December 2012, when he was found with indecent images on his mobile phone.
At that time, he was sentenced to 16 months in prison.
It was revealed that Cocking, who was then 68 years old and residing at Armley Prison, had a history of sexual offenses dating back to 1970.
His past convictions include multiple sentences for indecent assault and other serious offenses, with his last release from prison occurring in December 2010.
Following that release, he was subject to a strict sexual offences prevention order that prohibited him from entering parks alone or having unsupervised contact with children under 16.
Prosecutor Martin Robertshaw detailed the findings from the police search, which uncovered a disturbing collection of images, including 1,176 at the lowest level of seriousness and 116 at the highest.
The court also heard that Cocking had a history of abuse, with his defense lawyer, Craig Sutcliffe, revealing that Cocking had himself been abused as a child.
The judge’s decision to impose a five-year sentence reflects the seriousness with which the court views his repeated offenses and the ongoing threat he poses to the community.
