DENIS LEWIS FROM IPSWICH ESCAPES PRISON AFTER PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS EXPOSE HIS CRIMES
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Ipswich, pensioner Denis Lewis, aged 69, narrowly avoided a prison sentence after being caught in a sting operation conducted by paedophile hunters.The incident unfolded after Lewis attempted to engage in illicit conversations with a decoy posing as a 13-year-old girl named 'Hannah' on the social networking platform Skout.
According to court proceedings at Ipswich Crown Court, Lewis believed he was communicating with a minor, but in reality, the profile was managed by Cobra UK, a vigilant group dedicated to exposing online predators.
The conversations between Lewis and the decoy spanned over a two-week period, during which he was repeatedly informed that 'Hannah' was a young schoolgirl of just 13 years old.
Despite this, Lewis made inappropriate sexual comments and discussed masturbation, as detailed by prosecutor David Wilson.
The police were alerted on November 27, 2018, after Cobra UK provided crucial information leading to Lewis's arrest at his previous residence in Haverhill.
During the subsequent investigation, authorities seized his computer and mobile phone, which revealed disturbing evidence.
Analysis of these devices uncovered a total of 71 indecent images classified as Category A—the most severe level—along with 58 images categorized as Category B.
Additionally, investigators found 140 images in Category C, along with 20 videos of the same level, as well as four extreme pornographic images and one extreme pornographic video.
The images depicted children estimated to be between three and five years old, highlighting the severity and depravity of the material found.
Lewis refused to cooperate during a police interview on November 28, 2018, replying with a 'no comment.' However, during a re-interview in June 2020, he made some admissions, as noted by the prosecution.
Lewis had previously pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including attempting to incite a girl to engage in sexual activity, three counts of making indecent images, and possessing extreme pornographic material.
The court was informed that he had a history of such offenses, which contributed to the seriousness of his case.
On Thursday, Judge Rupert Overbury delivered the sentence, opting for a two-year prison term that was suspended for two years.
The judge also mandated that Lewis complete 30 days of rehabilitation activities and imposed notification requirements that will last for ten years.
Furthermore, a 10-year sexual harm prevention order was issued against him, restricting his future conduct.
The court also ordered Lewis to pay costs amounting to £350.
This case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and community groups to combat online child exploitation and protect vulnerable minors from predators.
