DANGEROUS PAEDOPHILE DAVID WILSON FROM GRIMSBY SENTENCED AFTER 25 YEARS ON THE RUN IN AUSTRALIA
In a significant development in a long-standing case of child abuse, David Wilson, a man originally from Grimsby, has been sentenced to seven years in prison after a relentless 25-year police manhunt.Wilson, now 78 years old, had managed to evade justice for over two decades, fleeing the UK and establishing a new life in Australia.
His extradition back to the United Kingdom earlier this year marked the culmination of a complex and painstaking investigation involving both British and Australian law enforcement agencies.
Wilson’s criminal history dates back to the 1980s and 1990s, during which he committed a series of heinous offences against four young victims.
These crimes, which police describe as having 'stolen the innocence' of two girls and two boys, involved acts of indecency and assault that left lasting scars.
The offender had carefully integrated himself into local families, seemingly with the sinister intent of targeting vulnerable children for abuse.
Residing on Yaru Street in Queensland, Wilson had previously pleaded guilty to multiple charges in Australia, including two counts of indecent assault, four counts of indecent assault on a male, and two counts of indecency with a child.
Despite his guilty pleas, he initially failed to appear in Grimsby Crown Court in 1995 when charged with indecent assault against two females, both under the age of 14 at the time of the offences.
Over the years, authorities left no stone unturned in their efforts to locate him.
It was only in 2013 that two men, who had been abused by Wilson as minors, came forward to police, providing crucial new information that reignited the investigation.
This new evidence prompted a renewed focus on Wilson’s whereabouts and activities.
A spokesperson for Humberside Police explained that Wilson had gone to great lengths to evade detection.
He had altered his identity multiple times, holding various passports and driving licenses issued in Australia and New Zealand under different names and dates of birth.
The investigation revealed that Wilson traveled frequently between these countries, making it even more challenging for authorities to track him down.
Thanks to a coordinated effort between Humberside Police and Australian law enforcement agencies, Wilson was finally extradited to the UK in July 2020.
His return marked the end of a long and arduous pursuit, culminating in his sentencing at Grimsby Crown Court.
Today, he was formally sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment, and it was confirmed that he will spend the rest of his life on the sex offenders register.
This case underscores the importance of international cooperation in bringing offenders to justice, regardless of how long they have managed to evade capture.
