June 2012 Sex offender jailed for four years following ‘amorous relationship’ with teenage girl SEX offender Robert Smith has been jailed for four years after a long-running “amorous relationship” with a teenage girl. Smith, 36, formerly of Lord Street, Grimsby, admitted five offences of sexual activity with a girl under 16, between January last year and February this year. Patrick Palmer, prosecuting, told Grimsby Crown Court that Smith sent inappropriate text messages to the girl and became involved in a sexual relationship with her. The girl said they had been “messing around for ages together” and had sex “loads of times”. Other sexual activity also took place. Michael Culshaw, mitigating, said the relationship was consensual and there was a bond of affection between Smith and the girl. She had made it clear that he had never hurt her or forced her to do anything. He made immediate admissions at the police station. Father-of-two Smith had been working but would now lose his job. Judge David Tremberg told Smith: “You allowed an amorous relationship to develop, which involved you and her in sexual conduct. Only time will tell how this will impact on her emotional well-being. “You went on to offend on a repeated and serious basis over a period of a year.” Smith, recently living in Goole, was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and was banned from working with children for life.
