DAVID WARD OF GRIMSBY SENTENCED TO 13 YEARS FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF GIRL

In a case that has shocked the community of Grimsby, David Ward, a 44-year-old man, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 13 years after being found guilty of multiple serious sexual offences involving a young girl. The court heard that Ward, who previously resided on Wymark View in Grimsby, engaged in a series of disturbing and manipulative acts of sexual abuse against the victim, targeting her repeatedly over a period of time.

During the trial at Grimsby Crown Court, a jury convicted Ward of nine separate sexual offences. These included two counts of rape, along with other charges of sexual assault and inciting or causing sexual acts. The court, however, acquitted him of an additional twelve sexual offences, which means he was found not guilty of those allegations. The verdicts on some of the charges were reached by narrow margins, with two of the guilty verdicts decided by a 10 to 2 majority, and another by an 11 to 1 majority.

Following his conviction, Ward was subjected to a lifelong sexual offences prevention order, which aims to restrict his activities and protect the public from potential reoffending. Additionally, he is required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and community safety.

In the aftermath of the sentencing, Detective Constable Julian McGill, a member of the police’s public protection team, expressed his strong feelings about the case. He described the offences as “appalling” and praised the victim for her remarkable courage and strength in coming forward to report the abuse. Detective McGill emphasized that the victim, with the support of her family, can now look forward to a future free from Ward’s influence.

He further commented on Ward’s character, stating, “Throughout the investigation and trial, Ward has shown himself to be a manipulative and callous individual. He clearly presents a danger to the public, and, thankfully, that risk has now been removed, as he is now where he belongs – in prison.”

Detective Sergeant John Shepherd also highlighted the significance of the sentence, noting that it sends a clear and reassuring message that the justice system takes such crimes very seriously. He acknowledged the extensive police investigation supported by Children’s Social Care and expressed gratitude to the victim and her family for their cooperation, which was crucial in bringing the case to trial.

Sergeant Shepherd emphasized the importance of victims’ courage in reporting abuse, recognizing the additional stress involved in criminal proceedings. He reassured the public that the police have specially-trained officers dedicated to supporting victims and their families throughout the investigative process. Finally, he urged anyone with concerns about potential child sexual abuse to contact the police directly by calling 101, reaffirming the commitment to safeguarding children and prosecuting offenders.
