DAVID WALKER CAUGHT IN SUNDERLAND PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS SCHEME

In October 2017, a disturbing incident unfolded involving a charity worker from Sunderland who was caught in a sting operation conducted by paedophile hunters.

The individual, later identified as David Walker, believed he was communicating with a 15-year-old boy and had intentions of meeting up for sexual activity.

Walker-Shears was under the impression that his messages were private exchanges with a teenage boy, but he was actually speaking to members of Guardians of the North, a vigilant group that sets up fake profiles to catch potential offenders.

These hunters had created a profile posing as a 15-year-old named 'Ryan' to lure in individuals like Walker.

During the confrontation, Walker-Shears was recorded on camera and confronted by the group.

The Newcastle Crown Court heard that Walker had sent explicit messages to the fake profile, including a statement saying, “I want you in my bed so much.” The court was informed that the conversation quickly took a sexual turn, with Walker being aware that 'Ryan' was a minor.

Prosecutor Lee Fish explained that the communication between Walker and the fake profile was explicit and that it became clear early on that 'Ryan' was only 15 years old.

It was also revealed that Walker had joined Grindr, a dating app, with the intent of finding new sexual partners, despite being in an open relationship with his long-term partner.

Further evidence showed that Walker had sent a photograph of his genitals to the fake profile and had arranged to meet 'Ryan' for sex.

When questioned by the police, Walker admitted to his actions, stating, “I have been really stupid.” He chose to decline legal representation, openly admitting his guilt by saying, “because I’m bloody guilty.” At sentencing, Judge Tim Gittins expressed his disappointment, remarking on the gravity of the case and the fact that Walker, a man who had worked hard in his life, was now facing serious charges.

Walker-Shears, residing at Argyle Square in Sunderland, pleaded guilty to attempting to incite a child under 16 to engage in sexual activity.

As part of his sentence, he was given a three-year community order, a sexual harm prevention order, and was required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years.

The court’s decision underscores the severity of his actions and the ongoing efforts to protect minors from exploitation.
