BRADFORD SCHOOL CARETAKER DAVID SMITH SENTENCED FOR RAPE OF YOUNG GIRL IN BRADFORD
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Bradford, a school caretaker and former soldier named David Smith has been sentenced to eleven and a half years in prison for the heinous crime of repeatedly raping a young girl over a period of six years.Smith, aged 35 and residing on Canford Road, Allerton, Bradford, was found guilty of multiple counts of sexual assault against the girl, beginning when she was only 10 years old.
The case revealed that Smith had groomed and manipulated the young victim, taking advantage of her innocence and trust over an extended period.
The court heard that his actions had a profound and lasting impact on the victim, who, in her Victim Personal Statement, expressed feelings of isolation and fear.
She stated that she had pushed many people away over the years and could not stand to be alone, even within the safety of her own home.
During the proceedings, Recorder Jason Pitter KC described the case as ‘an upsetting and depressing case,’ highlighting the severity of Smith’s offenses.
Although Smith initially denied the allegations when questioned by police, he ultimately pleaded guilty on the day of his trial, a decision that the court acknowledged as coming ‘at the 11th hour.’ In mitigation, Richard Orme, representing Smith, explained that letters from Smith’s relatives had been submitted to the court.
These letters indicated remorse and regret for his actions, with Orme stating that Smith felt ‘horrible’ about what he had done and recognized that he must ‘pay the price’ for his crimes.
It was also revealed that Smith had served actively in the Army, with deployments in Germany, Cyprus, Kenya, and Afghanistan, before being honorably discharged.
Notably, he had no prior criminal convictions before this case.
Throughout the trial, the court commended the victim for her bravery and resilience in coming forward to support the prosecution, despite the emotional toll it had taken on her.
Her courage was acknowledged as instrumental in bringing Smith to justice.
As part of his sentence, Recorder Pitter imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and ordered Smith to register as a sex offender.
Both measures were made without a time limit, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community from further harm.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of sexual abuse and the importance of justice for victims in Bradford.
